Year 1/2 

Overview of Learning

The Grade 1/2 staff would like to extend a warm welcome to all students and parents, as we begin the new school year! We hope everyone had a wonderful and restful summer break. We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to working together with teachers, parents and students to create the best possible learning environment. English

In Reading and Viewing, students will learn to recognise and read short vowels, common long vowels and consonant digraphs, and consonant blends. Students will practise using a range of comprehension strategies to better understand a text, focusing on inferring. Students will analyse and infer the characters' feelings, actions, and motivations.

In Writing, students will focus on writing narratives using correct simple and compound sentences, ensuring proper use of capital letters, full stops, and finger spaces. Students will also continue to develop their ideas in their Writer’s Notebook, engaging in all stages of the writing process, including planning, researching, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing.

In Speaking and Listening, students will continue to focus on phonemic awareness by manipulating more complex sounds in spoken words through knowledge of blending and segmenting sounds, phoneme deletion and substitution.

Maths 

In Number and Algebra, students will continue to recognise, model, read, write and order numbers to at least 120 (Grade 1) and to at least 1000 (Grade 2). Students will partition one and two digit numbers in Grade 1 and in Grade 2 students will rearrange, regroup, and rename two and three-digit numbers.

In Applied Mathematics (Measurement, Space, Statistics) students will describe the duration and sequence of events using years, months, weeks, days and hours in Grade 1, and in Grade 2, students will identify the date and determine the number of days between events using calendars. Students will ask questions to their classmates, gather responses and data in different ways. They will create data displays e.g. lists, tables, picture graphs and interpret the data displays.

Inquiry

Throughout this unit, students will explore the meaning of right and wrong in a range of familiar situations. They will discuss their own responses to familiar comfortable and uncomfortable situations, provide reasons for their beliefs and opinions and discuss how personal feelings can influence how they and others behave in different circumstances. Through discussions with their peers, they will determine the impact their actions can have on others and actions they can take to ensure the classroom is a safe and healthy environment.
