Mrs Danielle Cremona - Mathematics Coordinator

Over the past few weeks, I have enjoyed visiting our Year 3, 4, and 5 classrooms during Mathematics lessons to observe an effective teaching strategy in action: The Extended Handover Model. This model has been incorporated into the new Year 3–6 Mathematics units released by Sydney Catholic Schools.

Think of this model like teaching a child to ride a bike, rather than suddenly letting go of the seat, the teacher gradually eases back support as the student gains momentum and balance.

Here is how this approach directly supports your child's learning:

  • Gradual Progress: Responsibility shifts from teacher to student slowly and intentionally, never suddenly.
  • Active Learning: Students don't just sit and listen, they actively practice and solve problems during the instruction phase.
  • High Visibility: Because students work live on mini-whiteboards or notebooks, teachers can immediately see their thinking and respond to their needs in real time.
  • Early Correction: Misconceptions are caught and fixed on the spot, well before independent tasks even begin.

By addressing errors early, our students are tackling their independent work with much higher confidence, fewer frustrations, and a secure understanding that builds true mathematical fluency. It has been wonderful to see our Year 3–5 students thriving!
