From the Classroom

Grade 1 News!

We have had a terrific term so far in Grade 1 with lots of learning taking place across all areas of the curriculum. Students continue to approach their learning with enthusiasm and are growing in confidence each day.

In Reading, students are continuing to enjoy our weekly big books while developing their comprehension skills. We have also continued to build our reading stamina during our daily reading sessions. Spelling has become a big focus in the classroom and students are enjoying learning new words that have come from their own writing. If you see a Grade 1 student around, ask them to spell their BOB Words!

Writing is becoming a classroom favourite and students particularly enjoy their extra-long writing session on Thursdays. We have been responding to prompts with a big focus on punctuation, interesting vocabulary and varying sentence openers. Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Kimmorley have also enjoyed hearing students proudly share their writing.

Maths groups continue to be a big hit across the Grade 1/2 area. We have been strengthening our addition and subtraction skills through regular fluency tasks while also concentrating on all things place value.

We have recently finished our Theme unit about the zoo and thoroughly enjoyed our excursion. Some of the Grade 1 highlights included spending time in the butterfly house, seeing the baby giraffes and watching the cheeky gorilla!

Last week, we thoroughly enjoyed our ‘Hip Hop’ incursion. The Grade 1 students certainly had some terrific dance moves and loved participating in the energetic session.

With only three weeks left of the term, I am sure we will continue to develop our learning and achieve many more wonderful things. Be sure to check out our lovely photos below!

Foundation "Magic Squares" with Lego

In this series of lessons, students were introduced to artist Paul Klee. Students explored and discussed his style of art. Students observed how Paul Klee uses geometric shapes in his artwork. Students recognised and named these shapes in his self portrait, cityscapes and castles. Students then used geometric shapes in their own artwork to create a picture of a cityscape, and used acrylic paint and lego to create printed squares and rectangles to recreate one of Paul Klee's "Magic Squares" paintings.  Next week, students will colour their dried prints with watercolour paints.
