SRC Report - Georgia Fleming
This term in the SRC we held not 1 but 2 incredibly successful events. On the 21 March we held our annual Worlds Greatest Shave event. We raised an astonishing $5000 with the help from our School Captain, Tehmi Harding and another one of our amazing Year 12s, Kate Garry. All profits went directly to the Leukaemia Foundation to help support ongoing research and patients. We had a sausage sizzle with the line going for miles, our easy bake sale and of course our head shaving station where Mr McNeil showed off his amazing barber skills.
The following week on 27 March, we held our first ever Outside the Locker Room fundraiser. Raising money for underprivileged sporting clubs and schools to gain the mental health literacy required, students dressed up in their best team colours and sports attire to compete against their peers in a range of activities such as a Penalty Kick, Teachers vs Students Running Race, and Longest Kick with a wide range of prizes to be won. In combination with our SRC President, Georgia Fleming, Koonung raised $1500!
After a very successful Term 1, the SRC are holding 2 massive student forums to help get student input on what the school needs and how we could improve our community. We are also looking at holding some more events this coming term so keep your eyes peeled and come along to our fortnightly meetings in A3!
House Captain (McCubbin) - Nathan Truong
So much has happened since the start of the year, Term 1 was filled to the brim with everything possible. Firstly, we had our swimming carnival early in the year while it was still scorching hot. It was great to see everyone dress up according to the theme and even have a runway for the first time this year. It was also great seeing the number of students participating in events to win medals and house points. Sadly, McCubbin house did not win.
The school also had many of the clubs up and running (and new ones as well) which meant lunchtimes were even more exciting than usual. Our cross-country carnival also occurred with everyone running and the top students going through to the next round for cross country. In addition to these fun activities there was plenty of schoolwork, tests, and sacs! We have certainly been kept on our toes throughout the term.
Coming up later this term we have our school athletics carnival which we hope will be big and have even more people participating in events. The theme the house captains chose for this year is heroes vs villains so personally I am really excited to see all the creative costumes people make.
House Captain (Conder) - Ella Peterson
Term 1 was really successful for the house competition. The first main event was the annual Swimming Carnival where we introduced a new activity for students to show off their costumes. The theme this year was the Krammy’s (Koonung Grammy’s), where we saw plenty of students dressed as their favourite artists. To begin the day, we had all students who dressed up to put their costumes on display and walk the red carpet. This was followed by some ex-musical students perform an opening act. After plenty of competition, at the conclusion of the day, it was announced that Condor had won the most house points for swimming carnival.
The next major house competition event was the Cross Country Carnival, where McCubbin took home the most house points. The House Captains also took on some extra work over Term 1, running a short competition for a new house points display that will be up soon. Congratulations to Kian Shafaie for winning the competition, we can’t wait for your design to come to life. Alongside this new display, we also established a new display board in the senior centre, “What’s up at KSC?” for our leadership team to put up posters about upcoming events.
Lastly, our House Captains ran a Year 7 capture the flag event during lunchtime to introduce themselves to the new students which was extremely popular. The House Captains cannot wait for the upcoming Athletics day which will accumulate the most house points out of all events this year. Don’t forget to dress up as your favourite hero or villain!
Literacy Captains - Clio Vassiliades and Ellyse Blyth 📚🤟🏻
So far this year, the Literacy Captains have been heavily focusing on the student led Koonung Chronicle. A collection of short, student-written articles surrounding many of the amazing events and activities Koonung has to offer. From behind the curtain information of the Koonung musical, ‘Chicago’, to student experiences in excursions and fun interactive activities, the Koonung Chronicle has many fun and engaging reads written by the students, for the students. Currently, the first issue of the new edition of the Chronicle is set to release sometime in May/June. On top of this, we are in the middle of planning a Koonung Podcast, where students and teachers can share their own fun thoughts, stories, and ideas in an easy-access media form! The podcast is still being planned, so keep your eyes peeled on compass for more information in the future!
Middle School Captains - Rachel Go, Moksha Iyer, Jun Mieu, Tiana Nguyen
Greetings from your Middle School Captains! We are Rachel, Tiana, Moksha and welcome back to Jun!! Middle School has had an enjoyable (we need a better word) and amazing (another better word) Term 1 and we’ve kicked off even better with the beginning of our journey for Term 2. We’ve had so much going on in Term 1, from Year 7 camp at Alexandra Adventure Resort, Year 8s who were also on their Survivor Camp adventures and 6 of the Year 9s (including Middle School Captain Jun) attended the Alpine Leadership School Program to Snowy River for the entire term. On top of this we have attended Connect Days for Years 7-9, and the Year 7 BBQ. We are lucky to have so much support and dedication from the staff, who are always there for us. All these great times will provide us with memories that we will always cherish. Looking ahead, we have the 100 days of school for year 7s, more information coming and more being planned that will be updated on very soon!! Thanks!!
