Principal News

Principal's Conference

I'm looking forward to attending the South Central Principal Conference in Broome next week. It promises to be a rich and inspiring week of learning, with a strong focus on Indigenous culture. Highlights will include visits to remote schools in Beagle Bay and Derby - an invaluable opportunity to deepen cultural understanding and connection. I look forward to sharing photos and insights with our students upon my return, helping to foster greater cultural awareness within our school community.

Spending time with fellow principals will also be incredibly valuable. There is a deep sense of mutual understanding among us—we all recognise how complex and demanding the role of a principal can be. This week away will be a chance to learn from one another’s experiences, strengthen our professional support networks, and return re-energised.

During my absence, Evelyn Whatmore will be Acting Principal. I know the school is in very capable hands, and I thank her for stepping into the role.

Staffing Update

We're excited to welcome two new teachers to our school:

Miss Rachel Anfield will be our new Prep Teacher from the beginning of Term 3 and also teach Year 5MG from June 2 to the end of Term 2 while Ally and Vanessa are on leave. Rachel brings 7 years of experience, including time teaching Prep in Ireland.

Miss Gabi Vass will take over Year 5MG from the start of Term 3. Gabi has taught for 4 years in the Catholic Schools system, and brings great senior primary experience.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Rachel and Gabi to St Mary’s.

Mother's Day Celebrations

The Mother’s Day celebrations at St Mary’s were truly special this year! From the festive stall and exciting raffle to a joyful breakfast and a beautiful luncheon by the bay, the week was filled with love, gratitude, and community spirit.

A big thank you to all our generous sponsors, dedicated volunteers, and everyone who joined in to make it such a memorable week.

Head over to the Parents and Friends page for more photos and details from our wonderful Mother’s Day celebrations!

Mural Project

We’re excited to announce that our front student entrance is getting a vibrant makeover with a mural created by artist Roxy, in collaboration with Daliah and a group of student artists from St Mary’s.

Roxy, supported by Posca pens, will work with selected students from Years 1 to 6 to plan and paint a unique, collaborative artwork. Last week, Daliah and the Art Leaders met with Roxy to show her around and discuss ideas. On Thursday, Roxy and Daliah met again to set the project timeline.

This fully funded opportunity will see students involved in every step of the creative process. Like we do with our sports stars, we’re proud to recognise our budding artists — students have been chosen from each class to take part.

Playgroup

Last Friday, we welcomed four families to our St Mary’s Playgroup. The morning was filled with fun activities, laughter, and opportunities for children and parents to connect and play together.

A big thank you to our amazing LSO, Georgie Benvenuto, for running the session with such warmth and creativity. Her energy and care helped make the morning a great experience for everyone involved.

We look forward to seeing more families at our upcoming playgroup sessions!

Interschool Sport

Last week, our Year 5/6 students faced off against St Finbar’s in a fantastic round of interschool sport. The matches were competitive, spirited, and full of energy, with our students showing great skill, sportsmanship, and teamwork across all games. It was a joy to see them play with such passion and support one another throughout the day.

Today, the excitement continues as we take on our longtime rivals, St Joan of Arc! This is always a hotly anticipated match-up and a great opportunity for our students to rise to the occasion. We’re proud of how they represent our school—not just in their efforts on the field or court, but in their team spirit, encouragement of others, and determination to give their best.

Fun Fit Fridays & Roadshow Coffee

We had a brilliant afternoon at today’s Fun Fit Friday, with over 30 students enthusiastically taking part in Netball and Football. A big thank you to Sam Sullivan and Ed Simpson for running such energetic and engaging sessions!

Adding to the atmosphere, the coffee cart was on-site, serving up coffees, hot chocolates, and a selection of pastries. It was the perfect way for families and staff to enjoy a hot drink while catching up and supporting the students.

The coffee cart will be back on the following Fridays this term:

  • Friday, 30th May
  • Friday, 13th June
  • Friday, 4th July

Don’t miss the chance to grab a warm drink, enjoy a pastry, and be part of our fantastic Friday fun!

Thanks
