Future Study Options
For many students, choosing where they continue to study after leaving school can be a daunting prospect, but many of our Year 12 students must soon make this decision. A few things need to be kept in mind to help with this decision.
Whether you decide to study at TAFE or University, there are some questions that you should think through before making your final decision. For example:
- What are they known for?
Many institutions have specialties in various fields with differing levels of acknowledgement overseas. Studying at a particular institution will often provide you with greater access to knowledge and technology in your desired field if it is your specialty, usually making you more employable in the future.
- Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT)
The Australian government funds research on various institutions to ensure that prospective students can access honest reviews and data from past and current students. Ensure you look at these indicators to get an unbiased assessment of the tertiary organisation.
- What industry experience do they provide?
Many courses now require students to undertake placements as part of their studies. Make sure to investigate the requirements of these placements, the opportunities and networks that would be available to you, and the type of support that you can expect.
- What is the campus culture like?
Every institution is different, so make sure that you attend open days and information evenings so that you can talk to current students, get a feel for the campus atmosphere, and see if it will suit you.
- Where is the campus situated?
One of the most important factors is location. Make sure that public transportation or adequate parking is available on campus. Think about whether you can realistically travel the distance multiple times a week or if you will have to move closer to the campus.
These are just some things you need to consider before deciding where you would like to continue your studies. Make sure you investigate your options thoroughly before making a decision, and don’t hesitate to reach out to people when you have questions.
