TRADES

The Trades Department has been buzzing with activity this week as students across various year levels continue to develop their hands-on skills in Metals, Automotive and Building and Construction. Here’s a snapshot of what’s been happening in our workshops.

Year 10 Automotive – Small Engine Fundamentals

Year 10 Auto students rolled up their sleeves and got to work on small engine mechanics. The week was all about disassembling small engines, identifying key components and understanding their functions before reassembling them. This helps students grasp essential mechanical concepts, including compression, ignition and fuel systems whilst problem solving.

Year 10 Metals – Mastering Brazing Techniques

This week, Year 10 Metals students were introduced to oxygen-acetylene welding, focusing on brazing techniques. The demonstration provided them with a strong foundation in handling oxy-acetylene torches, understanding flame settings and properly heating materials to create strong, clean joins. These skills were put to practical use as students fabricated handles for their toolboxes.

Year 11 Building and Construction – Framing Dog Kennels

The Year 11 Phase 2 Building and Construction students have been making great progress on their stud-framed dog kennels. This project serves as an introduction to basic carpentry skills such as measuring, cutting, assembling wall frames and understanding the sequencing of a build. Within each stage, students gain insight into construction methods. Their dedication and attention to detail is already evident, with solid progress being made towards the completion of their projects.

Looking Ahead

As we move further into the term, students will continue to expand their skills with more projects and industry-relevant learning experiences. Stay tuned for more updates on their progress and achievements.
