As we prepare to celebrate the Feast of Saint Mary MacKillop on August 8, we remember the life and legacy of an Australian whose deep faith and tireless service helped shape Catholic education across Australia.

Mary MacKillop was born in Melbourne in 1842 and baptised at St Francis Church in Lonsdale Street, our city’s oldest Catholic church and originally our cathedral. From humble beginnings, Mary answered God’s call to serve others, especially those in remote and struggling communities.

Her mission was particularly challenging and even dangerous, especially as a woman. She relied on charity and lived a simple life. She refused to be silenced or controlled, speaking out for justice. Although she faced considerable criticism and hostility, and was excommunicated from the Church, Mary remained faithful to the Church and her mission. In 2010 Mary was named Australia’s first saint.

Over the holidays, I visited Penola, South Australia, where Mary’s mission began. In 1866, with the support of Fr Julian Tenison Woods, she opened her first school in a disused stable. Visiting the museum and church, I felt admiration at Mary’s story; her extraordinary vision, faith and courage.

Her famous words, “Never see a need without doing something about it,” continue to guide us today. As we approach Mary’s feast day, may we reflect on how we can live her example in our lives: by responding with compassion, standing strong in our faith, and bringing hope to others.

100 Days of Magical Learning

Our Preps reached 100 days of school last Friday — and what better way to celebrate than with a magical breakfast and some truly enchanting costumes! From wizards to fairies, the magic was everywhere as they marked this special milestone in style! Even our teachers and LSO's joined in the fun, dressing up to make the day extra magical for our little learners!

MACSeye Update

Thank you for your continued patience and support as I advocate for improvements to our OSHC service. In my communications with MACSeye I outlined three key priority areas: communication, compliance, and capacity building of staff. As a result of these communications I can report the following:

MACSeye personnel have installed the app for the gate and rectified the issues with the sign-in/out process.
As of today there will be three key staff on duty; Kelly (coordinator), Monica and Marcus. This improved consistency of staff should support the children and assist communication with families and with me.
Food offerings have improved, with a greater variety of fruits and vegetables now being served and options other than bread.
Staff will engage in professional learning and be supported with ongoing coaching/mentoring.
This week you should expect to see aesthetics that align with a fun, child-friendly environment and engaging options, and a broader range of activities to support children’s interests and development.
To assist the behaviour management issues I have reiterated with the children that our school expectations and rules remain consistent across all settings: Safety is our Right, Learning is our Responsibility, and Respect is our Way.
I have provided educators with a list of behaviour expectations for each area that students use during OSHC to help ensure consistency of behaviour and a safer environment
I have conveyed your concerns around increased fees, your challenges in contacting the MACSeye office, and the ‘numbers policy’ related to Student Free Days/school holidays.

I have scheduled another meeting with MACSeye personnel this Thursday and will keep you informed of further updates.

Holy Rosary Disco

Preparations for the Holy Rosary Disco 2025 are commencing with a meeting being held on the evening of Wednesday 6th August. If you would like to get involved please reach out to Susan (parent volunteer disco coordinator) on 0432 684 812 for meeting details.

Please advise the office if your P-Yr 5 child will not be continuing at HR next year. This helps us to organise class structures and staffing so your advance notice is much appreciated.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Freya who recently attended the International Highland Dancing Festival of Australia. It’s an annual event held in Gosford, NSW and attracts over 300 competitors from all over Australia and around the world including Scotland, NZ and Canada. Freya won her trophy highland fling dance and the runner-up aggregate prize for her section. This is a significant achievement and a testament to Freya’s commitment to her dancing. Well done Freya!
