Year 5/6

Winter Lightning Premiership

On Friday 25th July, all the Year 5 and 6 students represented MEPS in their chosen winter sport in a variety of locations around the district. This day had been postponed due to inclement weather in Term 1, and the students had eagerly awaited their chance to show off some new and improved sporting skills.

T-Ball

Our team improved from getting zero runs in the first game, to 13 runs in the second and then an exciting finish with 15 runs in the last game. I was very proud of myself when I hit a home run and we had loaded bases, a great way to end the day. - Baki

The whole day was great. In particular, when I was on the pitcher's plate in the second game, I took a diving catch and everyone cheered. I scraped my arm which wasn't so good though. But it was a good day overall. - Lucas

Year 5 ‘The Last Bear’ Unit

In Year 5 English lessons, students have been reading a beautiful book called The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. It tells the story of a brave girl named April who travels to Bear Island with her dad. People believe there are no more polar bears there… but April discovers one — thin, lonely and in need of help. She names him Bear and they form a special friendship. April realises she must help him, even if it means taking risks. Through courage and kindness, she shows that even one person can make a big difference. This powerful story has inspired students to think about caring for animals, protecting the planet and standing up for what is right, just like April did.

As part of their learning, students also explored persuasive writing, using their knowledge to create powerful arguments about protecting polar bears and their habitats. They learned how to use emotive language, strong facts and persuasive techniques to convince others to take action. To share their work, selected students spoke confidently at Assembly, explaining what they’ve discovered about polar bears, why their icy homes are shrinking and how we can all help by making environmentally conscious choices.

“April’s brave friendship and rescue of Bear reminds us that even a young person can care deeply about our planet and help protect these amazing animals and the world they desperately need to survive.” - Matilda 5T

“With less ice to walk or rest on, polar bears struggle to catch enough food, swim longer distances, lose weight too fast and sometimes even drown or reach land where they face danger from humans or plastic pollution.” - April 5D
