What's happening around our school...

Foundation

The Foundation students have been using our fabulous interactive TVs to support literacy. Here we are sounding out and making words with digraphs (two letters, one sound).

We have been looking at measurement and focusing on measuring objects end-to-end, without gaps, with informal units such as counters, popsticks and blocks.

We were lucky enough to have also had the fire brigade visit and attend an incursion on Responsible Pet Ownership.

Grades 1 & 2

Earlier this term, the Junior School students attended a Responsible Pet Incursion.

We learnt about how to look after our pets and how to approach a dog that we don’t know.

We learnt that we need to STOP at least 3 steps away,

ASK if we are allowed to approach the dog,

let the dog SMELL the back of our hand and then PAT along their back from their collar. We should never approach a dog that is not on a lead.

Some of us were even able to put our new skills into action with Benson!

Grades 3 & 4

In grade 3/4 we’ve had a busy few weeks preparing for our production, practicing our songs, dance moves, and stage entrances. All the hard work paid off, and we were so proud to put on such an amazing performance last week!

Grades 5 & 6

Term 3 has been an exciting and action-packed time for our Year 5/6 students! Our senior students fully embraced their additional responsibilities during the school production, taking on key roles as leads or starring in multiple ensembles. Their enthusiasm, passion and dedication have been truly inspiring. We couldn’t be prouder of their resilience throughout the whirlwind of rehearsals, memorising lines, practising songs, and ensuring their costumes were ready to go over the past few weeks.

In Literacy, students are putting the finishing touches on their information reports. Each student has been researching and writing about the historical Australian figure after whom their Kalinda House is named: Dame Nellie Melba, Caroline Chisholm, Henry Parkes, and Frederick McCubbin. Throughout the process, students have developed strong research skills, learning to analyse information critically and write for different audiences and purposes.

In Mathematics, our focus has been on time. Students have been learning to convert between 12-hour and 24-hour clocks, measure and calculate elapsed time, and interpret and use timetables effectively.

We also had the pleasure of hosting the Lilyvale students from Japan, who visited our classes as their “home rooms”. It was so much fun to teach them some of our favourite brain break games, like Elevens (which we played in both English and Japanese!), Silent Ball and Heads Down Thumbs Up. Our students also had the opportunity to share insights into the daily routine of a school in Australia. In addition, we were lucky enough to experience a Japanese magic incursion together. Our Year 5/6 students did an outstanding job supporting the Lilyvale students, helping them feel welcome, and applying their problem-solving skills (including quick-thinking use of Google Translator when necessary!) to ensure their time at Kalinda was memorable and enjoyable.
