Kitchen Garden

On Tuesday of the last week of Term 2, our Year 3/4 students revisited our garden beds. It was a fresh and misty morning, and as much as the weather was cold, the excitement and eagerness to get into the garden was not deterred. We began by taking in a few long deep breaths to re-ground ourselves into our space, taking in the birds chirping, the rustling of the trees and breathing away the rush of the 'getting to school' routine.

We discussed our daily class tasks and the importance of caring for our plants and the environment. One of our main tasks was to plant the broad beans that Year 1/2's so wonderfully grew from seed in their classroom. The benefit of receiving full sunshine through their windows created the perfect indoor condition to grow our seedlings. Watering the tiny pots from the bottom also created strong roots and they are now thriving in our vegetable beds.

We then moved on to composting, understanding how organic waste breaks down to enrich the soil.  Opening the lids to our bins is always an element of ore with all the mini- beasts busy working hard to break down the organic matter.  Some students took to this task with great enthusiasm and gave both bins a good stir.

Our session ended with a quiet moment of reflection as we gathered, sipping warm tea made by our two volunteers, Mira and Elizabeth, who created two teas for us to try using herbs and citrus from our garden.

We are looking forward to harvesting the array of vegetables that are growing in our beds this term, as we have planted a variety of herbs, brassicas and root vegetables.  There will be exciting recipe ideas for our Year 1/2 students ahead.

We have attached a few recounts from our Year 3/4 students, which truly summarises the essence of our time we spend together in our Kitchen Garden.
