Little Scientists Program: Igniting a Passion for STEM
Sir John Monash Science School's Primary School Outreach Programs are proudly supported by our ongoing partnership with local primary schools, helping to inspire and nurture our high-achieving students.
One of the standout initiatives is the Little Scientists Program, which gives selected Grade 5 and 6 students the opportunity to explore advanced STEM topics alongside passionate Year 10 and 11 mentors from JMSS.
Over four engaging sessions held every Wednesday from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm, students participate in exciting hands-on experiments and delve into scientific concepts such as:
- The physics of flight
- The pH of everyday household items
- Cell structure, anatomy, and adaptation
- Robotics and engineering
JMSS mentors guide participants through each activity, fostering leadership, mentoring, and responsibility—skills aligned with the UNESCO Four Pillars of Learning and the school's Co-Curricular Program.
In Term 2, four of our own budding scientists took part in the program. Here are some of their reflections:
Shreya: “We were chosen by our teachers to be part of the Science Program.”
Eddie: “During the day, our generous parents picked us up from school and took us to the John Monash School.”
Audrey: “We did fun scientific experiments like the Egg Drop Competition. We had to design a protective carrier for an egg to survive a drop from a floor above—using a limited budget!”
Nara: “We also made popping boba pearls from different ingredients. They were actually edible, but since they were made in a lab, we couldn’t eat them.”
Eddie: “Another fun activity was using microscopes. We placed pond scum on a slide and looked through the eyepiece—it was full of amazing colours and shapes!”
This enriching experience not only sparked curiosity and deepened our students' love for STEM but also strengthened the bonds between our school community and Sir John Monash Science School.
We look forward to seeing what our future scientists will discover next!
