Wellbeing - Spotlight on our Social Emotional Learning Programs

Social Stencil is an Australian evidence-based social emotional program that Carnegie Primary runs in our Year 3 and 4 classrooms.

It provides students with a shared language and shared concepts to learn and talk about emotions, listening & attention, friendships, conflict and all the variations.

Social Stencil is a Neuroaffirming program.

What does that mean? Neurodivergent means that humans are naturally diverse — we are not all the same.

Some of our students are autistic, ADHD, or are dyslexic, for example. Their learning, sensory, listening, communication, or social needs and preferences may differ from those of most students.

Being neuroaffirming means we work to understand and make space for one another — rather than asking or expecting someone to change who they are in order to be included or be accepted.

All Australian schools are mandated to provide social emotional learning as part of their responsibility to children. Traditionally social emotional learning programs only discussed typical learning, sensory, listening, communication, or social styles. Social Stencil creates a platform for students to explore and understand themselves and others, our similarities and our differences.

"When we better understand one another, we can better work, learn and play together."

Connie Buckingham

The Social Stencil program is experienced as whole class discussions, games and small group challenges to explore themes and support peer to peer learning, helping to build a culture of respect and care.

Social Stencil provides students with a shared language and shared concepts to learn and talk about -

  • How we listen (all the variations)
  • Building emotional literacy (insights about myself and others)
  • Understanding Anger, Self-regulation and Co-regulation
  • Friendship concepts (and all the variations)
  • Why conflict happens (the Drama Triangle)
  • How to manage conflict independently
  • Problem solving/strategy check
  • Assertive
  • Caring for Others
