Year 3 Persuasive Writing: Using Language to Make a Difference
Our Year 3 students have been engaging in some powerful thinking as they learn the craft of persuasive writing. This term, they are exploring how writers use language to influence others and how to structure a formal persuasive letter that communicates a strong, well-supported point of view.
Students have been developing confidence using the PEPS structure—Point, Explanation, Proof, and Summary—to organise their ideas clearly. This framework is helping them present their arguments logically, ensuring that every opinion is backed by thoughtful reasoning and relevant evidence.
To strengthen their writing, students are also experimenting with persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions, thinking verbs, and high-modality language. These tools allow them to communicate conviction and challenge readers to consider new perspectives. It has been exciting to see students confidently using phrases like “We must protect…” or “Animal welfare should always be prioritised…” to enhance the formality and impact of their letters.
Their current writing focus is a topic they feel strongly about: the use of exotic and domestic animals in circuses. After exploring how these animals are treated and examining why many believe existing laws do not sufficiently protect them, students have been crafting letters that call for change. They are learning how to use evidence, emotive language, and ethical reasoning to argue that animals should not be used for entertainment.
The maturity and compassion shown in their discussions and writing have been truly admirable. We look forward to sharing their thoughtful and persuasive letters with families soon.

House Swimming Carnival Splashes Into Action!
What an incredible day at our House Swimming Carnival! The energy was sky-high as students from Fanning, Hollows, Fearnley, and Nolan filled the pool deck with colour, spirit, and determination. From the very first race to the final cheer, our swimmers demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and encouraged one another every stroke of the way.
Students proudly represented their houses across a wide range of events including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, novelty races—and of course, the fan-favourite relays! It was fantastic to see so many participants jumping into the water, giving their best efforts, and having fun alongside their teammates.
A special shout-out to the incredible staff and volunteers who ensured the day ran smoothly—whether timing races, marshalling swimmers, supporting nervous competitors, or helping keep the day organised and exciting.
Every splash, every cheer, and every high-five contributed to a brilliant celebration of house spirit, teamwork, and perseverance. Congratulations to all students who participated and represented their houses with pride!
Whether you were chasing a ribbon, conquering a personal goal, or simply enjoying time with your mates, we hope you had a memorable day at the pool. We can’t wait to dive back in for next year’s carnival!
🏆 House points and final standings will be announced soon—stay tuned!
