Grade 1
Was it the mermaid, turtle or penguin who wrote 6 7 in the science room? Grade 1's used their science skills to solve the mystery. Using some filter paper, we separated the ink in the pens and were able to find the culprit! We learnt that water moves up the paper, picking up the ink and carrying it along. The different colours in the ink move at different speeds so they spread out and separate. We then compared them to other samples.
Grade 2
Students explored different materials, using playdough, sponges and paper. They squeezed, twisted, rolled and folded each material to see how they changed. Students discussed which materials were the easiest to manipulate. They also investigated whether the materials themselves changed or if only their size and shape did.
Grade 4
Students have been investigating electrostatic force, using balloons and tissue paper creations. Students rubbed balloons on their hair, clothing or cloth to create static electricity. They then used the balloons to attract and move their tissue paper creations, without touching them. This activity helped students to explore how invisible forces can act on objects.
Calling all creative kids — it’s time to unleash your inner Water Hero!
We'd love as many of our young scientists to take part in the 2026 National Water Week poster competition. This year’s theme is Water Heroes Make Every Drop Count, and we can’t wait to see your imaginative, colourful and inspiring creations.
You need to design and upload a poster that celebrates this year’s theme. Entries close 5pm, Friday 11 September, so get those pencils, paints and ideas flowing. You can enter with your parent at home through the website: Coliban Water’s 2026 National Water Week Competition page or drop of your poster with your name, age and class into the Science Room for submission.
