On Monday, 26 August the Year 11 History team visited the National Vietnam Veterans’ Museum located at Phillip Island. This day was a fantastic opportunity for the students to extend their knowledge and understanding about the Vietnam War though handling genuine military items and talking to Vietnam War veterans. The students were also given the opportunity to view the restoration of a variety of aircraft taking place within the museum. During the return trip there was also time to view the pelican feeding at San Remo along with a lunch at one of the many local shops (plus the occasional seagull attack!).
Below are a couple students’ reflections on the excursion…
‘Going to the Vietnam War Museum was such an eye-opening experience to see real and genuine weaponry, clothing and vehicles that were used during the Vietnam War. Not only did we get to hold and touch grenades, smoke bombs and try on all sorts of authentic military clothing, but the volunteers at the museum taught us facts that we might not have been able to learn in the classroom. I found it interesting to learn more about how the six Australian’s missing in action during the war were later found with the help of the Vietnam government and the Vietnam War Museum’.

‘We were fortunate enough to have some amazing tour guides and meet some Vietnam veterans who gave us an insight into the Vietnam War we wouldn't have been able to gain inside the classroom. We were also able to handle and try on some pretty cool artefacts and uniforms, making it a really immersive experience that allowed us to gain a unique perspective on the experiences of the soldiers involved in the war. Learning about the conscription system from a veteran who experienced it was super interesting’.
