Future Focused Learning Update

Future Focused Learning at Mackellar Primary School

In Term three, all students were busy delving into their Inquiry topics by using skills such as problem-solving, researching and collaborating to find and solve real-world problems that matter. Below is a snippet of what each year level has been undertaking in Future Focused Learning.

Prep

In Term three, the Preps investigated their personal family history by identifying who is in their family and how their family has changed over time. Students described the differences and similarities of students’ daily lives compared to the daily lives of their parents and explored significant and cultural events in their personal families. The prep students designed a cultural box filled with significant artefacts from their family history. They have had a wonderful time telling their peers about their families and why they are special.

Grade One

In Term Three, the Grade one students became mini scientists and explored biological science, the study of living and non-living things. The students discovered the external features of flowering plants and animals and  looked at ways to care for our environment. They were busy planting their own veggie garden and came up with a plan to create their own animal and habitat by using arts and crafts. The Grade one students enjoyed a visit to the Werribee Open Range Zoo where they explored living things.

Grade Two

Last term, the Grade Two’s investigated how they are connected to different places and to each other. The students explored their local community by naming and locating the different places we have in our community here in Delahey. The students came up with ways they can care for the environment and designed a model community ensuring the community had all the things in which a local community needs.

Grade Three

In Term Three, the Grade three students investigated Earth and Space sciences. Students delved into everyday phenomena such as day and night, the stages of the moon, tides and the earth’s rotation around the sun. Students created a model of the earth to demonstrate their understanding of how the earth rotates and how this causes day and night.

Grade Four

The grade fours have placed their scientist’s thinking caps on and have been exploring physical and chemical reactions. Students have been researching heat and looking at conductors and insulators. They have been conducting their research through science experiments where they have written a science procedure for their peers to follow.

Grade Five

The students in Grade five have been studying biological science and the structural and behavioural adaptations of living things and how these adaptations help them to survive. The Grade five students put their investigations into action by taking a local walk to Linear Park, Taylors Lakes and explored the local wildlife. The Grade fives also learnt about the importance of bees to our environment and decided to adopt some bees for our school.

Grade Six

In Term three, the students in Grade six investigated physical and chemical science. The students used science experiments to create their own circuit boards and explored the properties and behaviours of chemical science. Students also researched a famous scientist and presented their research to their peers. This term, students are exploring geography and the spatial characteristics of places from a local to global scale. They will look at the interconnections of places and the effects of geographical challenges.
