Whats Happening in Grade 6

English

During Term 4 the students will focus on narratives. Students will learn about the structure and purpose of narratives and will have a number of opportunities to write their own narratives.  Students will use figurative language such as metaphors, similes, personification and onomatopoeia in their writing. 

 

Students will be reading the novel ‘The Cay’ by Theodore Taylor which is set in Curacao during World War II. Students will explore and analyse the complex and changing characters and the themes such as racism, friendship, survival and personal growth through life experiences in the novel. 

 

Mathematics

The Grade 6 students will be continuing the Learning Assessment Framework (LAF) program that we commenced in Term 3 and then they will be learning how to solve long division problems with and without remainders.  Students will also explore capacity and the four quadrants of the Cartesian Plane and plot points in relation to the origin point using positive and negative numbers. They will explore the rules of BODMAS to solve number sentences. 

 

Future Focused Learning (FFL)

This term our Inquiry topic is Geography. Students will be locating and investigating continents including Europe, North America and South America and comparing these to Australia.  They will identify differences in the demographic, economic and cultural characteristics of these countries. Students will also explore how humans have impacted the environment and the concept of push and pull migration.
