Literacy

This term, our Literacy program will focus on preparing our Year 5 students for leadership roles as they move into Year 6. We will explore what it means to be a leader, discussing key traits such as responsibility, communication, and empathy. Students will also be writing their own leadership speeches, and presenting them to the Year 3 to 5 students and the teachers towards the end of term.

For our Year 6 students, we will be supporting their transition to high school by inviting former students to visit and answer any questions they may have about this next big step.

In writing, students will be exploring biographies and autobiographies, learning how to tell the story of someone's life. They’ll also have the opportunity to reflect on their own lives as they create their own autobiographies.

Numeracy

This term in Numeracy, students will begin by exploring money and finance, focusing on percentages and financial planning to develop real-world problem-solving skills. We will then move into algebra, where students will learn to recognise patterns and use symbols to represent numbers in equations. We’ll also cover shape, investigating geometric properties and relationships. As we approach the end of the year, we’ll take time to review and consolidate past topics, ensuring students feel confident in their understanding before moving forward.

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, our focus is on history. Students will explore significant historical events and create timelines to understand the sequence and impact of these moments. We will delve deeper into specific figures and events, leading up to an exciting project where students will write their own historical narrative. This narrative will be based on a real historical figure or event, allowing students to bring history to life through their writing.

RE

This term, we’re diving into Morality and Justice. These are big words, but don’t worry, we’re breaking them down. Students will be exploring what it really means to be Christian, and how we, as a Catholic community, can share God’s love with others (it involves more than just being nice to your siblings!). We’ll also be reflecting on how our faith shapes our world and our identities. Speaking of history, we’ll take a fun look back at how our communities and religion have changed over time.

Assemblies

Assemblies will continue to be held at 8:50 am in the morning on Fridays, for the remainder of 2024.

Homework Expectations

Homework is handed out on a Monday and due back on Friday. It is an expectation that children read 20 minutes each night, with 1-2 of these sessions completed reading aloud to a parent to practise their reading skills.

Students will be given a literacy and numeracy activity to complete. They will also have spelling words chosen by them, focusing on our weekly ‘root’ word. We recommend that students attempt to complete homework over the course of the week instead of doing it in one night. All homework instructions can be found on Google Classroom.

Reminders

  • Student’s need to bring their charged device everyday.
  • Canteen on Monday & Friday, student’s are responsible for their own money.
  • Assembly is now held fortnightly on a Friday Morning in the Atrium.
