Year 4 News

Welcome to Term 2!
We hope you all had a restful and Holy Easter break. It has been wonderful to see the students return refreshed and ready to continue their learning after a successful Term 1. This term, we will be building on the skills and knowledge developed last term while introducing new and engaging learning experiences. It has been lovely to see the children reconnect with their peers and settle back into routines so smoothly. We look forward to continuing to work closely with you throughout the term.
Religion
Students will explore the question, ‘Why is being courageous important?’ They will start with their own experiences of when they have been or seen people being courageous. They will learn about the story of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13). In this passage of Scripture, the disciples of Jesus went from being afraid, to being brave and ready to share Jesus’
message after receiving the Holy Spirit. Other aspects of the Catholic faith that students will be learning about include God as Triune God and that Jesus was the promised one of the Old Testament whose life, death and resurrection reveals God’s love.
English
Students will continue to develop their close reading strategies, with a stronger focus on moving beyond literal questions to deepen their comprehension. They will explore inferential and evaluative questions through whole-class discussions and written responses, helping them to read between the lines and think more critically about texts. Students will also have opportunities to read aloud during whole-class sessions to build confidence and fluency. This term, students will explore a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, allowing them to engage with different text types and purposes. This will support students in expanding their vocabulary and developing a deeper understanding of how texts work.
Students will continue to develop their ideas and writing skills across a range of tasks throughout the term. A strong focus will also be placed on handwriting, supporting students to consistently join their letters and develop neat, fluent writing.
Mathematics
This term students will focus on chance and probability, learning to describe how likely events are and make simple predictions. They will explore statistics by collecting and interpreting data in meaningful ways. Students will continue developing their multiplication skills and use them to solve a range of problems. They will learn about time, including reading clocks and working with real-life time situations. There will also be opportunities to revise and strengthen their understanding of decimals. Throughout the term, students will be encouraged to explain their thinking, build confidence, and apply their maths skills in practical ways.
Humanities
Students will continue to develop their understanding of Australia’s past through the study of First Contact. They will explore life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples before European settlement and examine how this changed after 1788. Students will investigate the reasons for the First Fleet’s journey and learn about the experiences of different groups, including First Peoples, convicts and settlers. Throughout the term, students will develop their skills in asking historical questions, analysing sources and exploring different perspectives. They will be encouraged to deepen their understanding of the importance of Country and how connection to land, sea and sky shapes culture and identity.
Capabilities
Students will develop their Personal and Social Capability by building self-awareness and social awareness. They will learn to recognise and manage their emotions, understand how their actions affect others, and develop positive relationships. Students will practise working collaboratively, making responsible decisions, and showing empathy and respect within the classroom and wider school community.
