Year 2 News

Welcome back to Term Two at St. Agatha’s!
RELIGION
This term in Religion, students will explore different names for God as they learn about the concept of ‘Trinity’ (God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit). They will deepen their understanding that all people are precious, unique, and loved by God. They will learn about God the Father as a loving creator who gives life, and reflect on how they can care for the world around them. Through stories, discussions, and hands-on activities, students will recognise how their senses help them experience and appreciate God’s creation.
They will be encouraged to respond by showing kindness and love to others, following God’s example. Families can support learning by discussing ways to care for the world and recognising moments of love and kindness in daily life.
ENGLISH
This term students will explore books by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors, as well as Australian and international writers, discussing how characters and settings connect. They will compare how similar topics are presented in different types of texts and develop spelling skills by learning common patterns, prefixes, and suffixes. There will be a focus on expanding our studnets vocabulary and the different parts of speech including nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.
In writing, students will create persuasive texts, focusing on using interesting vocabulary, compound sentences and stating their opinion with reasons to support. They will practise sharing their opinions about books they enjoy, giving reasons for their preferences. Through these activities, students will build confidence in reading, writing, and speaking, developing important skills in a fun and engaging way. Families can support learning by encouraging reading and writing at home and discussing books together.
MATHEMATICS
This term in Maths, students will develop their number skills by adding and subtracting one- and two-digit numbers, using different strategies and number sentences to solve problems and fractions: focusing on halves and quarters.
In measurement, they will identify and demonstrate quarter, half, three-quarter, and full turns in real-life contexts. They will also learn to read time on an analog clock to the hour, half-hour, and quarter-hour. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks, students will build confidence in working with numbers, fractions, and time.
Families can support learning by practising simple number facts, looking for fractions in everyday life, and reading the time together.
HUMANITIES
This term the focus is Geography. Students will learn how places can be represented on maps, from local areas to the whole of Australia. They will explore Australia’s states, territories, and major features, as well as the significance of country and places to First Nations Peoples. Students will also investigate how people are connected to different locations within Australia and around the world. Through inquiry and discussion, they will draw conclusions and make proposals about different locations, considering how they are used and valued. Families can support learning by looking at maps together, discussing places they have visited, and talking about their connections to different locations.
