LOTE: Japanese

Welcome back to Term 2.

 

This term we continue to develop our students understanding not only of the langauge of Japan but the culture and traditions. 

 

Below is an overview of what your child will be learning

 

FOUNDATION

During Japanese lessons in Term 2, Foundation students will learn to:

  • count from 1 to 10 in Japanese
  • recognise the Kanji characters for numbers 1 to 10
  • notice how Kanji numbers differ from English numbers
  • use songs and repetition to help remember Japanese numbers
  • understand the significance of Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day) and why it is celebrated in Japan

Through songs, games and interactive classroom activities, students will build confidence in their Japanese language skills. FT, FB and FL classes will continue to be taught by Yandell Sensei, and FD by Ashcroft Sensei.

 

YEAR ONE

During Japanese lessons this term, Year 1 students will continue their learning from the end of Term 1 with the focus topic “The Farm”. This unit will build on their existing knowledge while introducing new vocabulary and sentence patterns.

During this unit, students will learn to:

  • name a selection of farm animals in Japanese
  • read and say colours
  • create simple sentences describing the colour of different farm animals
  • trace and copy Kanji and Hiragana characters related to the vocabulary

 

YEAR TWO

This term in Japanese, Year 2 students will take part in an engaging unit titled “I Want Fruit”. 

During this unit, students will learn to:

  • recognise, say, read and write the names of nine common fruit
  • ask and answer simple questions about fruit they like and dislike
  • trace and copy words using Hiragana and Katakana
  • use polite expressions to ask for and receive items
  • take part in a shopping story through choral reading

Students will practise their learning through role play activities, helping them apply their language skills in real life contexts.

 

YEAR THREE

During Japanese lessons this term, Year 3 students will continue their learning from the end of Term 1 with the focus topic “I Went to the Zoo”. 

As part of this unit, students will:

  • learn the names of 12 zoo animals in Japanese
  • ask and answer the question “What did you see?” in Japanese
  • use time words to sequence events
  • write vocabulary and simple sentences in Hiragana
  • read and write common Kanji

Through interactive activities, games and structured practice, students will build confidence in speaking, reading and writing Japanese.

 

YEAR FOUR

During Japanese lessons this term, Year 4 students will continue their learning from the end of Term 1 with the focus topic “In My School Bag”. 

As part of this unit, students will:

  • investigate the types of school bags used in Japan
  • learn vocabulary for common school bag items
  • use expressions for giving and receiving
  • create a mini book using new vocabulary
  • practise writing Hiragana accurately
  • make comparisons between school life in Japan and Australia

     

YEAR FIVE

During Japanese lessons this term, Year 5 students will continue their learning from the end of Term 1 with the focus topic “Family”. This unit builds students’ language skills while also developing their understanding of Japanese culture.

As part of this unit, students will learn to:

  • understand who the Imperial Family of Japan is and why they are important to Japanese culture
  • ask and answer questions about family members
  • state family member names and describe family groupings
  • understand and describe family compositions from texts
  • write vocabulary and sentences using Hiragana and Kanji

 

YEAR SIX

During Japanese lessons this term, Year 6 students will engage in a range of activities designed to further develop their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

Students will:

  • use Japanese to retell and discuss The Very Hungry Caterpillar
  • ask and answer questions using accurate pronunciation
  • construct sentences using particles and counter classifiers
  • write Hiragana and common Kanji with correct stroke order
  • use mnemonics and visual memory strategies to support the learning and recall of Hiragana
  • identify and recognise loan words from other languages used in Japanese

Through storytelling, structured language practice and reading and writing activities, students will continue to build confidence and accuracy in their use of Japanese.

6M and 6B classes will continue to be taught by Talia Sensei and 6N by Ashcroft Sensei.
