Welcome to Term 2!
We hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable break and is feeling ready for the term ahead. This term is packed with many learning opportunities and engaging activities to support students’ progress.
Below you will find:
- An overview of what your child will be learning
- Key dates and events to mark on your calendar
- Information on how to stay connected with your classroom teacher
We’re excited for another meaningful term of growth, learning, and shared achievements in Year 5.
Reading
Students will build their Reading skills by identifying key information in our novel text, Holes by Louis Sachar, and other texts, including exploring how stories and information are shaped by cultural, historical, and social contexts. They will think more deeply about what they read by discussing both the obvious and implied meanings, and how images, sound, and media features help create meaning.
Writing
In Writing, students will create Information Reports and Letters. They will focus on organising ideas clearly, using appropriate structures, and choosing language that suits the purpose and audience. Students will edit and improve their writing, learning how sentence structure and descriptive language can make writing clearer, more engaging, and more effective.
Mathematics
Students will continue to work on their number skills by undertaking subtraction and multiplication of whole numbers, decimals and fractions with regrouping of place value and fractional parts. They will also work with positive and negative numbers, as well as mapping and representing data, from gathered information.
Humanities
Our unit for this term is Geography. Students will learn how places and environments are changed and managed by people. They will identify the major geographical divisions of the world and explain the geographical diversity of places and the impacts of interconnections between Australia and other countries. Students develop questions, and locate, collect and organise information and data, as well as how to represent these in different formats.
Religion
Our strand for this term is Triune God. Students will learn that Catholics recognise Jesus as both human and divine, the Son of God. They will develop an understanding that Jesus, as Messiah, is the fulfilment of the Old Testament promise. They learn that Jesus’ life, death and resurrection reveal God’s love. Students also learn that the Holy Spirit is the love expressed between the Father and the Son.
Science
Students will learn about Earth and Space Sciences by modelling key processes that change the Earth’s surface. They identify natural hazards and propose human actions that can reduce their impacts. Students will make reasonable predictions, plan and conduct scientific investigations, represent findings in different formats to analyse and communicate findings, in order to develop reasonable conclusions.
Capabilities
Throughout the term, students will continue to develop their personal and social skills to support their wellbeing and learning. They will practise managing emotions, coping with challenges, working independently, and seeking help when needed. Students are introduced to critical and creative thinking by exploring context-specific learning strategies and continue to apply general learning strategies related to other curriculum areas.
