PRIMARY (F-6)

School Leaders Report

Welcome back to Term 2

It has been wonderful to see students return refreshed and ready for learning after the Term 1 holidays. Our teachers have also been actively engaged in professional development, continuing to strengthen their practice and support high levels of student engagement across all classrooms.

There is a real sense of excitement building as the Foundation to Grade 3 students prepare to move into the new building. Progress is moving along well, and we look forward to this transition in the coming weeks.

We warmly invite families to attend our Primary Assembly on Monday 4 May. Beth’s Grade 5 class will lead us in prayer, while Sophie’s Grade 2 class and Glenice’s Foundation students will share highlights from their learning. We hope you can join us for this special time together.

The students have enjoyed reconnecting with each other and

sharing their holiday news. It is lovely to see their smiling faces and watch them confidently come into the learning space ready to learn.

In English, we are continuing to learn and revise letter sounds and to stretch out words, saying each separate sound and then say the whole word. The children are using letter tiles to build words using letters learned eg. mat, fit. We have also been busy completing picture sound sorts.

In Mathematics, the children are developing the concept that numbers are made of smaller amounts that can be added or subtracted. They have been partitioning numbers to 10 into 2 or 3 groups, which is a necessary link to the idea of addition and subtraction.

The children were given their Term 2 reading diary last week. It is very important that children are reading their books at home. They proudly show us their reading diaries so we can see how regularly they are reading.

Year 1

Welcome back to our wonderful Year 1 families. Crystal and I hope your family have a safe and relaxing Easter. Our Year 1 students have returned to school settled and ready to learn.

In Literacy we started the term reviewing the spelling of Tricky Words we have covered so far and learning about two ways to spell the sound /ai/ (as in rain) - <ay> and <ai>.

We have continued to build fluency when writing, working hard to form our letters and where to sit them correctly on the dotted thirds. During InitialWrite, Year 1 students read a text about spiders and then had a go at writing sentences comparing two spiders using the word ‘but’.

In Mathematics, we are begun our first Addition and Subtraction unit. We begun by learning to partition (break) quantities of 10 into two and three groups. For example, 3 + 3 + 4 = 10.

In Humanities students have read a number of different texts, such as All Through the Year by Jane Goodwin, Where the Forest Meets the Sea by Jeanie Baker and  Looking After Country with Fire by Victor Seffesen.

Year 2

Term 2 has had a smooth start, and students have quickly settled into their learning routines.

The units we have started are:

  • Religious Education: Pentecost
  • Mathematics: Place value, plotting numbers, and learning the symbols for greater than (>) and less than (<)
  • Reading: Connecting with text for comprehension
  • Spelling: The rule of doubling the final consonant when the previous vowel is short before adding the suffix -ing
  • Writing: Writing a procedure

Last week, students were given their weekly spelling words to practise at home. We are also beginning daily maths fluency practice in class.

This is something that can also be supported at home, such as practising:

  • Number bonds to 10
  • Number bonds to 20
  • Multiplication facts for the 2s, 5s, and 10s

Year 3

Year 3 students have been learning about trees and why leaves fall during autumn. They explored the differences between deciduous and evergreen trees and developed an understanding of how seasons affect plant life. As part of this learning, the students went on a walk around the college to observe the beautiful gardens and the trees beginning to shed their leaves. They paid close attention to colour and shape, using these observations as inspiration to create their own autumn themed watercolour illustrations.

Year 4

Our students have all started Term 2 off well and it's been exciting to hear what everyone has been up to over the school holidays.

In Mathematics, our topic to begin the term is decimals. Although our student's confidence was quite low when it came to decimal knowledge, they have been proving themselves wrong and flying through. Students have worked on putting decimals on number lines, representing, writing and renaming tenths and hundredths into decimals as well as ordering numbers to two decimal places.

In Literacy, students have now finished our class novel ‘Leo and Ralph’ which they all seemed to enjoy it. Ryleigh and Eliza’s class spent some time out in the sunshine to finish their classroom novel this week.

We have been working on our own narrative stories, working on planning, writing a problem, using direct speech, resolution paragraphs, conclusions and more. Creating our own narratives has shown how creative we can be when using our imaginations.

We are looking forward to what is ahead for us in Year 4 this term.

Students have settled in well to Term 2 and have returned with a positive attitude toward their learning. In Mathematics this fortnight, we are focusing on fractions, specifically converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and comparing equivalent fractions using number lines. Students are building confidence in recognising how fractions relate to one another and representing them visually.

In English, we have started reading our class text Black Cockatoo. The story follows Mia, a 13-year-old Indigenous girl living in the Kimberley, who rescues a wounded black cockatoo (her totem animal). The novel explores important themes of family, culture, and inner strength, and is already sparking thoughtful discussions among students.

It has been wonderful to see students engaging with both their learning and each other so positively. We look forward to continuing to build on these strong foundations throughout the term.

Year 6

The Year 6 students have continued to engage positively in their learning, showing great focus and effort across all areas. It has been pleasing to see their confidence grow as they develop new skills and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.

In Literacy, students have been exploring prefix patterns such as syn, sym and pro, applying these to words and sentences to strengthen their understanding of meaning. Alongside this, they have been researching Aboriginal history in Australia, including the Referendum, and using their learning to create factual recounts. In Mathematics, students have been learning about fractions, including identifying and comparing mixed numbers and improper fractions, and developing their understanding of their values. In Humanities, students have been researching influential historical leaders and their impact on the world, before using this information to create detailed biographies that reflect their understanding.

Specialist - Visual Arts

Students across the Primary years have been engaging in rich, artist-inspired learning experiences, exploring visual language, symbolism, and stylistic techniques.

Year 5 and 6 have been developing expressive responses to the work of Gustav Klimt, with a focus on his use of decorative pattern, symbolism, and the iconic application of gold. Students experimented with contrast through the use of black markers alongside gold paint, carefully considering composition, repetition, and the interplay between positive and negative space to create visually striking pieces.

Year 3 and 4 have explored abstract portraiture through the lens of Indigenous artist Gordon Bennett. Students investigated how identity and storytelling can be communicated through layered imagery, symbolic elements, and expressive mark-making. Their works reflect a growing understanding of abstraction, as they moved beyond realistic representation to convey ideas and meaning in more conceptual ways.

Foundation, Year 1 and 2 students have created vibrant, pattern-based artworks inspired by Romero Britto. Focusing on bold colour, line, and repeated shapes, students designed and painted compositions centred around the first letter of their name. Through this process, they developed foundational skills in colour application, pattern-making, and visual organisation, resulting in joyful and highly personalised artworks.

Reminders:

Gallery Image

Parents/carers are reminded there is a very important process to follow if your student must leave the college at any time throughout school hours. Please ensure you follow these steps:

Parents/carers MUST provide a note to the front office, at the start of the school day, stating the following:

- Student Name

- Date of leave required

- The time the student must present to reception to take their leave

- If they will return to the college the same day, and if so what time they will return

- The reason for the leave being requested

- The parent/carer’s name and signature

Please note, students will only be permitted to be collected by their parent/carer unexpectedly and without a note if it is an emergency.

We remind all that the college opens at 8:30am. This enables educators time to prepare for their day ahead. We appreciate your support in helping our educators be successful. Yard duty staff begin at 8:30am to monitor play spaces before the school day begins at 8:55am.

Upcoming Dates

Please refer to the calendar on PAM for upcoming dates for activities and events.
