School Immunisation Program

Supporting the School Immunisation Program

The Queensland School Immunisation Program is an important part of maintaining student health and wellbeing. All students in Year 7 and Year 10 are offered free vaccinations against meningococcal disease, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), and HPV. Schools that show strong support for the program consistently achieve higher immunisation rates and smoother clinic days.

Did you know?

Uptake in the Queensland School Immunisation Program is now only 61%. This means many students are missing out on receiving protection against serious vaccine‑preventable diseases. Queensland’s School Immunisation Program is an easy and convenient way for adolescents to get immunised.

What Helps Improve Participation

The biggest barrier to participation is low consent form return rates. The strongest enabler is strong school engagement, especially:

  • Visible leadership endorsement (especially from Principals)
  • Frequent, proactive communication with parents
  • A nominated SIP champion to coordinate activities
  •

Support Available for Schools

Queensland Health can provide:

  • Ready‑to‑use communication messages (e.g. articles, videos, FAQs) for parents and students
  • Practical tips to improve consent return and clinic‑day flow
  • Presentations for school staff

Please refer to the School Toolkit or the Information for Schools booklet for examples.

Please contact your local Public Health Unit or email immunisation@health.qld.gov.au for extra support or resources.
