Student Summit Empowers Student Voice at Balmoral

Balmoral State High School recently hosted a dynamic Student Summit, bringing together student leaders and representatives to collaborate on ideas that strengthen our school community.

Facilitated by Deputy Principal Mr Baker, the summit created a platform for open discussion, allowing students to share their perspectives on key areas such as belonging, inclusion, and school culture. A strong focus was placed on initiatives like Multicultural Day, with students contributing thoughtful ideas to ensure the event continues to celebrate the diversity that makes Balmoral unique.

The summit highlighted the importance of student voice in shaping the future of our school, with participants working together to identify opportunities for improvement and develop actionable solutions. It was an encouraging display of leadership, respect, and collaboration, with students demonstrating a genuine commitment to making a positive impact.

Balmoral looks forward to seeing these ideas come to life, as we continue to build a connected, inclusive, and supportive school environment for all.

Transition into High School

As part of Balmoral’s ongoing transition program with our valued feeder primary schools, students are being immersed in bespoke teaching and learning experiences designed to spark curiosity and build early connections to secondary schooling.

This week, our Technologies team visited Norman Park State School, delivering an engaging, hands-on session focused on how tools are used to design and create furniture and equipment. Students in the lower primary years were captivated, demonstrating high levels of curiosity and enthusiasm as they explored real-world applications of design and technology.

The session not only showcased the expertise of our staff but also highlighted the power of early exposure to practical learning experiences. It was a pleasure to also welcome the Principal of Norman Park State School, who joined the session and saw firsthand the impact of this engaging initiative.

Programs like this continue to strengthen partnerships and inspire the next generation of learners through authentic, future-focused experiences.

Engagement with Norman Park State School

Balmoral SHS staff recently visited Norman Park State School to engage with their Year 4 students. Our amazing Technologies staff, Alyce Goodacre and Tomas Silkman, ran a hands-on workshop where students created their own wooden pen or pencil holder for their desks.

Students had the opportunity to drill, hammer, glue, sand, and design something they can use every day in their classroom. It was fantastic to see their creativity and enthusiasm on display!

A big thank you to the staff at Norman Park SS for having us! We look forward to continuing these sessions throughout the year.

Engagement with Bulimba State School

On Thursday, Balmoral SHS staff also visited Bulimba State School to engage with their Year 4 students. Our innovative Science and Maths staff, Steve Marchant and Madeline Bell, delivered an exciting STEM workshop where students used robots to navigate courses and race each other.

Students designed their own courses using coloured cardboard and coded how their robots would move through them. It was a great opportunity for students to collaborate, problem-solve, and challenge themselves while having fun.

A big thank you to the staff at Bulimba SS for having us! We look forward to continuing these sessions throughout the year

The session was a fantastic opportunity for students to collaborate, think critically, and build confidence in a fun, hands-on environment.

A big thank you to the staff at Murarrie State School for welcoming us—we’re excited to continue building these connections throughout the year.

Hypersonix and Ferra engineering

Yesterday Year 10 Aerospace students at Balmoral SHS had the opportunity to visit Hypersonix and Ferra engineering.

Hypersonix is the leader in SCRAM jet technology, and you may have seen on the news recently that they successfully launched their DART AE001 with their SPARTAN SCRAMjet engine in it. Students were given a tour around their facility including visiting a CMC (Ceramic Matrix Composite) materials development team and how they are developing materials to withstand speeds in the hypersonic range (> Mach 5), an avionics engineer who designs and develops the electrical systems and the fluid systems lead talking through the preflight tests and preparation.

Ferra engineering is a leading aerospace manufacturer with Defence Australia, and the students were given a tour of their facility and learnt about materials processing, production, and assembly for a variety of different parts.

Thank you again to @AerospaceGISP who make these opportunities and connections possible to bring industry leaders to the students.
