Principal Update

Message from the Principal
Principal’s Update – Week 10
As we reach the end of Term 1, there is much to celebrate across our school community. It has been a term filled with incredible highlights, and I would like to thank our students, staff, and families for their ongoing commitment and contribution. I hope all members of our community enjoy a well-earned break over the Easter period.
It continues to be a privilege to work alongside such a dedicated team of leaders and teachers who are deeply committed to delivering transformative excellence in education for every student. Last week, Balmoral had the honour of hosting School Supervisors from across Queensland to showcase our reading practices in action within classrooms. This opportunity was extended to only two schools in the state, and we are proud to have been selected.
Through structured classroom walkthroughs, visiting leaders observed high levels of student engagement, explicit teaching of vocabulary, and purposeful text selection. Classrooms were calm, welcoming, and highly productive, with strong positive relationships evident between staff and students. The feedback affirmed the strength of our reading practices, particularly in Year 7, and highlighted the consistency and professionalism of our teaching teams.
Building on this work, Balmoral has been invited to host further visits for principals and school leaders to explore our approach to student engagement, including our application of Dr Amy Berry’s Engagement Continuum in instructional practice. Earlier this term, I was also invited by Dr Amy Berry to participate in a panel discussion for her upcoming book launch in South Brisbane. It is particularly affirming that examples from our school have been recognised as best practice within her latest publication. This recognition reflects the impact of our collective efforts and reinforces that our work is contributing not only to our own school community, but also to broader system improvement.
A key focus this year has been strengthening explicit classroom routines to enhance students’ sense of belonging and readiness to engage in learning. Our staff have been working collaboratively to analyse student evidence, refine teaching practices, and reduce variability across classrooms. It has been inspiring to see colleagues sharing best practice and supporting one another to improve outcomes for all students.
I would also like to acknowledge recent media coverage referencing antisocial behaviour within the broader community. While these situations are concerning, I remain incredibly proud of our students and the way they conduct themselves, particularly in challenging circumstances. Our students consistently demonstrate respect, integrity, and a willingness to seek for support when needed. Feedback from local police continues to reinforce this, with our students regularly commended for their behaviour and engagement.
We will continue to work closely with families and external agencies, including the Queensland Police Service, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students. Our school remains committed to fostering respectful relationships, addressing concerns proactively, and supporting all students to positively contribute to their community. While public commentary does not always reflect the full context, I am confident in the strength of our school culture and the values demonstrated daily by our students.
There is much to be proud of, and I thank our entire community for supporting the continued growth and success of our school in 2026.
Wishing all families a safe and enjoyable holiday break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back next term.
Regards,
Timothy Barraud
Principal
