Eco club

Vermont Secondary College

On Wednesday 20th March, the school Eco Club ventured out to the city to visit the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show!

The students met at Mitcham Station and took a bus to Blackburn, where we planned to take a train to Parliament Station. Unfortunately, we encountered a unique series of chaos. After our episode of unfortunate events, we arrived safely at the city. Soon enough, after a short walk, we arrived at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show!

Students were given the morning to explore the various shops and displays. There were many garden-related stores, and also some little handmade trinkets. Some of us bought some pretty bracelets, and other little items too. Mr Healey, Sophie, Caitlin and Olivia were fortunate enough to come by some free pizza samples.

Unfortunately, Tara, Nandini, Emily and I couldn’t find it, and could only see free tea. However, we did try our hand at making chopsticks at this wood store, which proved to be great fun!  At 11:30 all the students met Mr Healey at a small little seed planting workshop. We got to colour in plastic pots and tags, and then plant a daffodil bulb and cover it in dirt. The pot was ours to take home and brighten our gardens with.

We had some more free time. It was a lovely day, with bright blue skies and warm sunlight. There was an incredibly large fountain in the middle and some scenic sights. Many students opted to have lunch during this period. There were many food vans and stores scattered throughout the expo, fish and chips, Dutch pancakes, ice cream… all sorts of yummy food were up on offer.

At 1:15, all students met and explored the indoor part of the expo. The building was grand, and on the first floor, there were small flower exhibits and cars beautifully bursting with flowers and plants! The second-floor hosted little shops with handmade trinkets like crotchet flowers, jewellery, and handmade gifts. There was also a large area devoted to displaying paintings. It looked great!

Finally, the eco club went out to where our handmade scarecrow - organised by Emily – was standing. It was in the competition for scarecrows made out of recycled materials. Our school’s scarecrow is called Vermy!  After a group photo with Vermy, we ventured back to the train station.  Our journey back to Mitcham Station was uneventful, and we all got home safely, exhausted after a great day full of amazing memories.

Thank you to Mr Healey and Ms Holligan for organising this and taking us for a fun day out in the city! The excursion was a lot of fun!
