ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

On Thursday the 7th of March we packed up the staff, the students and the canteen then made our way as a united Vermont Secondary College collective to Bill Sewart Athletics Track. It was a fantastic day with over 1200 attendees. Many students demonstrated their athletic prowess and collegiality across a variety of events in hope of gaining as many house points as possible.

The marching band made their annual appearance on the front straight which was an absolute delight for all spectators in the stands. Participation was at an absolute premium as all three houses were extremely competitive throughout the day racking up those all important house points.

YEAR 7 ROUND ROBIN

TENNIS

VSC was represented by ten boys and four girls.  It was an extremely challenging day as it was incredibly windy and warm which made it difficult for all players to serve and execute their shots with any consistency.  All players adapted to this and tried their best in each and every match.

Our girls, Arleen, Rishika, Lingfei and Kristine, some of whom were reasonably new to the sport, played singles throughout the morning and improved as the day went on.  They had a fantastic attitude, learnt how to score, encouraged each other and enjoyed some success against various opponents and schools.

Our boys A team, Parth, Javen, Saarim, Jayden and Reuban, played singles against the three other schools and had some incredibly tight finishes including some close tie breaks.  As the day progressed, the boys then began playing their doubles matches and played fantastically as teams, making up some ground from earlier losses in the singles.  Unfortunately due to lack of time, all doubles matches could not be completed and the results on the day were decided by the singles draw alone.  This put Vermont in second place overall.  The boys should be extremely proud of their efforts and look to improve on this result the next opportunity they get.

The B team, Kaysan, Marcus, Abyan, Cyrus and Kelvin, played doubles initially and again, had some great results.  They did the best under those very difficult windy conditions and as the day progressed, were able to start to play their singles matches.  Some impressive results were coming into the clubhouse, however, like the A boys, not all singles matches could be completed.

Well done to all 14 tennis players – your positive attitude and determination across the day was fantastic to see.

 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Year 7 girls volleyball

The Year 7 Girls Volleyball teams did us proud. Congratulations to the A team (Micaela A, Izzy C, Chantelle C, Rosie, C, Lily J, Anisha R, Katherine Z and Ella R) and the B team (Sheridan H, Stella M, Ayla M, Bonnie N, Bonnie S, Dheeksha R, Alyssa T and Emily W). Both teams made it to the finals and unfortunately lost against Glen Waverley in two very close games! All are to be congratulated on their play and team spirit. Also, a big thank you to our 4 coaches- Shay J, Sophie R, Mia L and Oriana D, who worked hard all day to coach and encourage their teams. A fantastic day all round!

YEAR 8 ROUND ROBIN

TENNIS

On Wednesday, the 13th of March, our school’s Year 8 tennis team competed at the Waverley Division school Round Robin. Sadly, the rain had impacted play on that day, so the format of the tournament was changed from 6 sets per matchup to 2 sets per matchup. The boys’ team won the tournament, and will progress to the EMR finals on 11/11, while the girls’ team got second place after a good fight. Everybody did very well and even with the additional inconvenience of having to squeegee the courts after every fresh bout of rain, it was a great day and everybody had a lot of fun. Thanks to our student coach, Year 11 Aden too.

BOYS/MIXED CRICKET

The year 8 boys headed down to Mulgrave Reserve and had a battle on their hands before even taking the field, that being the weather! After a delayed start, we lost the toss and padded up to bat first against Mount Waverly. The boys put on a defendable score of 92 from 12 overs with a few stoppages due to weather. At the change of innings, Vermont struck early with the second ball of the first over with an inside edge through to the keeper. This elation was short lived though, as Mt Waverly’s top end batting order proved too tough for us in the end with our 92 not being enough to hold off.

Our second match saw us up against Highvale. We bowled first, and bowled well, rolling them for 35 runs. It was a quick run chase from VSC, pencilling in a victory for the day, leaving us with one win and one loss. Unfortunately, we needed to win both games to move through to the next round, however everyone still had a great day out representing VSC!

BOYS/MIXED BASEBALL

Well done to the Year 7 boys baseball team. There was plenty of talent on display as Vermont showed Highvale and Glen Waverley how a seamless baseball team plays. Special mentions to Jackson A and Albert B for consistent catching and batting skills, but the real star of the show was Tony H whose performance had spectators looking on in awe – Tony might just have the LA Dodgers attention in a few years time. Thank you coaches Tom L and Max S for inspiring the year 7s.

BOYS/MIXED CRICKET

Vermont SC vs Mount Waverley: At the start of the day everyone was very excited to play cricket. When we started the first game we didn't start too well, we were losing wickets very fast, after the first 8 overs we had lost about 6 wickets and we were at a low run rate. At that point we were at about 74 runs and what we wanted was about 130 runs. At the end of our batting, we ended up with about 84 runs, much lower than we wanted, but we worked really well together as a team, and we won the game.

Vermont SC vs Highvale; As we were getting ready to play the next game we knew that we really wanted to win. We batted first as we watched our team make runs we were very happy because we were on track to make 100 but then we lost a lot of wickets and only made 95 runs which is a lot but then they came on the field and absolutely smacked every ball for 6 and we lost in the finals but the team did all they could in the end. Thank you to our teacher Mr. Duiveman, our coaches : Aidan S and Dhariya S and scorer Rohan M.

GIRLS CRICKET

Yr 7 Girls Incredible Cricketers 2024 The Vermont Girls All Stars won both matches today against Glen Waverley and Mount Waverley. All girls were wonderful and trained very hard in the lead up to the main competition. Stars of the day were Emily C and Emily A who together made 30. Zainab scored 2 fours and Huma also scored a couple of fours. Thanks to Emily C and Emily A- our Captains and Elodie and Zoe the dynamic duo and super coaches. Good on you team. See you all again in term 4 😀

Ms Callegaro

BOYS/MIXED VOLLEYBALL

Congratulations to both our Boys Volleyball teams – despite not advancing to the next round, plenty of successes were had. Our Team B made it all the way to the finals, only just losing out after reaching a third set. Plenty of MVPs in both teams: Kai P demonstrating true leadership, Yi Fei H hitting a six serve streak of aces, Christian E pulled off some excellent manoeuvres, and Levon E showed mastery in all areas of the game. Well done to all our participants – wishing you the best of luck in all your sporting endeavours!  Mr Nyhuis.

GIRLS CRICKET

What a day for our girl’s cricket team. It rained and rained and rained. However, did that stop them? No way. They had a big win against Glen Waverley SC and then had to play a very strong Mount Waverley SC team. With an over to spare our Team got the win and now it’s off to the next stage of finals in October. Two terrific innings from Amelia K, a brilliant containing over by Hailey W, sharp keeping by Amy S and a total team effort in the field. Well done Team. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the day with you.

BOYS/MIXED VOLLEYBALL

Both made finals A team lost to Highvale in the 3rd set by 2 points and B team also lost to Highvale.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The VSC Girls Volleyball teams had a very successful day at the Mullum Mullum sports stadium. Congratulations to the A team (Oriana D, Shaylea J, Myrto K, Fiona L, Mia L, Venus N, Sophie R and Kristy W) for winning all four games! The first games were comfortable wins, but they had a very tight final where they had to come back from being down a set and a match point against and talented Glen Waverley team. The B team (Charlotte C, Victoria C, Jade G, Pheobe I, Chern Xuan K, Tanya K, Perri L, Remi P and Alexandra R) made the finals after winning two out of three pool games but lost the final in three sets to Glen Waverley. Well done and good luck to the A team in the next round!

SOFTBALL

Well-done to Hadassah B., Aaliyah B., Erin C., Abigail C., Anika L., Jade M., Zoe M., Nandini N., Charlotte R., and Yoyo W. on such a great day out at Napier Park for Year 8 Girls Softball. We learnt so much on the day and supported each other to another level! The girls showed great sportsmanship and stayed humble throughout the whole day. We won the first game against Mount Waverly; we then had a close loss to Glen Waverly for our second game. Keep up the good work team, cannot wait for next year!

BOYS/MIXED BASEBALL

The Year 8 Team had trained hard and were well prepared for the day! We started the day with a win, 11-6 over Highvale. The team worked well, and multiple students pitched in a terrific game 1 victory. In game two we witnessed the closest a team could get to victory but just missed out on a comeback win. The tying run on third base and winning run at second base were ready to go but we struck out to end game two. In Game three we scored the maximum 5 runs in each inning to finish the day on a positive note with a 15-0 victory! I would like to thank the team for their amazing effort on the day.
