Resorative Practices

Restorative Practices

In our restorative school, we understand that each day may present unique challenges for every student. For example, yesterday your child may have been engaged and focused, but today, they might be facing some difficulties. We strive to create an environment where every child can thrive, using patience and persistence to tailor our approach to each child's needs.

Language is a powerful tool in guiding actions and interactions, both at school and at home. We aim to communicate respectfully and calmly, understanding that our words can greatly influence behaviour. By using what is known as ‘Affective Statements’ (statements expressing feelings), we convey to our students how their behaviour impacts others.

At school, we employ a technique called Priming to influence behaviour positively. This means using the right words to guide students actions. For example, instead of saying, "Don’t drop your rubbish on the ground," we would say, "It’s disappointing to see rubbish on the ground because it makes our school look messy and uncared for, can you pop your rubbish in the bin."

You can also apply this approach at home. When addressing behaviour, focus on the positive outcomes you want to see. For instance, instead of saying, "Stop leaving your toys everywhere," try saying, "I appreciate it when you put your toys back where they belong."

This approach is supported by research, showing that positive language leads to positive behaviour. By using language that encourages positive outcomes, both at school and at home, we can create a supportive and nurturing environment for your child to learn and grow.

Thank you for your partnership in fostering a positive learning environment for all our students.
