From the Principal

Mr Jon Franzin

Dear Parents, Friends and Students of St Virgil’s

Stations of the Cross – Senior School

Last Wednesday, we celebrated an Easter Liturgy for the whole school, recognising that for many of our students, this will be the only opportunity they may have had to experience the real meaning of Easter in terms of the betrayal and death of Jesus, preceding his resurrection to new life on Easter Sunday. Thank you to our Year 10 Spirit Leaders including Riley Drew, Riley Stocks, Jack Byrne, Kooper Holden, and Joshua Topham for their performance of the Stations of the Cross. They did a magnificent job recreating the Stations of the Cross at the Senior School. The Stations of the Cross refer to a series of depictions of Christ's journey. They represent 14 key moments in the trial, crucifixion, and burial of Jesus Christ. Stations of the Cross, or the Way of the Cross, have been celebrated by Christians for centuries, typically right before Easter.

Sports Assembly

Last Tuesday, we acknowledged and celebrated those students who achieved some outstanding results in a range of sporting endeavours. During the assembly, we acknowledged and celebrated the U17 Men’s Quad gold medalists at the Australian Rowing Championships, the Head of the River Boys Junior Shield Champions, and the SATIS State-wide 2nd’s Cricket Champions. We also introduced our two soccer teams, who will be representing St Virgil’s at the EREA National Football (Soccer) Tournament in Brisbane.

Creating a culture where students strive to do their best is one of our goals at St Virgil’s, and the extensive number of students who have set goals and made good progress towards meeting them – some making great progress – is testimony to the development of that culture. God has given all the students talents in various ways, and we encourage them to make the most of them. I take this opportunity to thank our coaches who have played an important role in the development of these young men.

Staffing Update

Next term, Mr Daniel Lapolla – Deputy Principal will be taking renewal leave from Monday 13 May (Week 3 Term 2) until Monday 12 August (Week 4 Term 3) when he returns to his substantive position. During this time, Mrs Kim Mooney will be taking on the role of Acting Deputy Principal and will be supported by Mr Thymon Venter who will take on the role of Acting Assistant Principal – Student Wellbeing. This will allow Mrs Mooney to continue to oversee her current role whilst taking on additional responsibilities as Acting Deputy Principal. I thank Mrs Mooney and Mr Venter for taking on these additional responsibilities during this time and wish Mr Lapolla all the best for his period of leave.

Student Free Day

A reminder that Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences will take place on Monday 29 April, with students returning to scheduled classes on Tuesday 30 April.

As this is the last edition of The Star for this term, I wish all of our families all the very best for the upcoming holidays and safe travels to those heading away during this time.
