Year 3

What a great first Term it has been!

As we come to the end of Term 1 we celebrate and acknowledge the resilience of Grade 3 students as they complete their very first NAPLAN as well as all of their hard work during the last 9 weeks.

In reading students have been developing on their comprehension skills through mentor texts. Students have been working on predicting before, during and after the text, making connections and have started to use Somebody, Wanted to, But, So, Then to help guide summarising after reading a text.

Writing: Students have been working very hard to complete a narrative. Students have been using their thinkers journals to help develop their ideas and plan. Grade 3’s have been working on keeping their narratives interesting by using sizzling starts, descriptive language and building tension throughout their narrative.

Maths has been a lot of fun as students explore length. Students have been using materials, rulers and tape measures to help their understanding of measuring accurately. In number and algebra students have been exposed to many strategies to help support solving addition and subtraction problems.

In health students have been learning about different emotions and what they look like. Students have been discussing what triggers certain emotions and how we can cope with big emotions.

The grade 3 team hopes that everyone has a great break and we look forward to a new and exciting Term 2.

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

We are all finding it hard to believe how quickly time has flown and that we have just days left until the school holidays!

In reading the Year 4s have been exploring ‘realistic fiction’ mentor texts. When we’re reading a Realistic Fiction text, we are looking to see that each part of the story seems real. To do this we have to read critically - Reading critically means thinking deeply about what you read. It's not just about understanding the words, but also asking questions, making connections, and forming your own opinions about the story or information. It's like being a detective, looking for clues in the text to understand it better and decide if you agree with it or not.

In writing students have been encouraged to think like a writer and also think like a reader to create narratives that are interesting and engaging. It has been wonderful to have students asking for more time to workshop these, and to see the effort they have put in and the enjoyment they have taken away from this process. We can’t wait to share them with our families.

In maths we have been exploring strategies for addition, such as using number lines, the split strategy, ‘make to 10’ (rounding) and the vertical alogorithm. Students have been challenged to examine their ways of working in order to explain their thinking.

In science we completed our unit on forces by examining the simple games of marbles (whole class) and ten pin bowling (individually) to identify and describe the forces at work; such as push, pull, friction and gravity.

Year 5

The year 5s have been very busy the last few weeks continuing their wonderful leaning and also completing NAPLAN!

In Reading, Year5 students have been learning how to infer, analyse and synthesise using various narratives. The students have been learning to identify character traits and how they change throughout the story. Through reading and gaining new information, they have been dissecting the author's choices and stating how their thinking has grown and changed.

In Writing, the Year 5 students have been learning about narratives. We are continuing to write all about Forkys adventures and are now beginning to edit and publish our narrative pieces.

In Maths, we have been learning about Place Value, Addition and Subtraction. Students have been learning to use these strategies to solve number sentences involving decimals for multi-numbered equations and worded problems. As we continue to learn about Data and Representation, we have been investigating different types of graphs including column graphs, dot plots and line graphs. Students are also learning to interpret, analyse and compare data to draw conclusions.

In Science, students have been conducting many experiments to support their learning of different types of matter. Last week, each class created Ooblek to explore how solids, liquids and gases can change state, that is from one to another.

In Health, students have been identifying and exploring risks and how we use appropriate strategies to stay safe. For example, we identified that we should always have an adult help or supervise us when using a stove at home.

Finally, students have learning about Democracy in Humanities. We have learnt about elections in Australia, making laws and what makes a good leader.

We can’t wait to see what’s in store for Term 2!

Kind regards,

Year 6

Time has gone so fast we are already in year 6!! We can't believe it. Although we are in the last year of primary, we get to do so many fun things such as getting buddies and doing inter school sports.

In Reading, we are focusing on different strategies like, analysing, predicting, critiquing and making connections. We have been reading books like Suri’s Wall, Hope is the Thing and Stolen Girl.

In Math the year 6's are learning about prime numbers, composite numbers, triangular and square numbers. We have also been learning about positive and negative numbers and how to add and subtract them. Positive numbers are whole numbers, but negative numbers are partial numbers.

For Humanities, we have been learning about the government and how elections work. Also, we made towers with 8 marshmallows and 10 spaghetti and worked in groups of 4 to 5 and our challenge was which group could make the tallest tower. In 6A, Stan’s team was the highset at roughly 45cm.

In Sports, we have been focusing on inter-school sports. In this subject we have made most teams and soon are going to practice with our teams, and we are looking forward to playing!

In Writing, we have been concentrating on narratives . We made a character from Shrek and used them to write a narrative. In this topic we have been also been learning about character development and character traits.

In Health, we have been learning about help seeking and how to get help out of school. We have also been learning about physical activity and its benefits. We are also going to be focusing on how media influences our physical activity choices.

In Science, we have been learning about micro-organisms and mould. We also did experiments with different combinations of yeast. We also focused on mould and where we can find it. These science lessons have been fun!

On Monday the 25th, two Paramedic's came into our classroom and taught us the DRSABCD. It means Danger, Response, Send, Airway, Breathing, CPR and Defibrillation. The 2 paramedics bought a dummy, his name was Frank and we practised CPR!
