PREP

Wow! Term 1 whizzed past so quickly, the Preps have had an amazing first term at school.

In Writing we have finished off our Recount unit with a Popcorn Party. We had an amazing time popping popcorn, eating it then writing about our very fun activity.

Students have been busy showing off their newly learned skills of sounding out words and writing all the sounds they can identify in each word. A massive achievement! Well done Preps!

This term in Reading we have been learning lots of new sounds and words. We have learnt the sounds, m, s, t, a, p and i so far and students have been trying hard to read words that contain these sounds. Over the holidays, a fun activity to do together is to be a letter, word and sound detective. Students can find known letters, words and sounds on street signs, catalogues, at home, on the tv etc. How many words can you find? This is a great game for numbers too!

In Maths we have been working hard to order numbers correctly and use our finger to count a collection of objects, matching that collection to the correct numeral. What a fun activity this was!

The 2024 Prep team would like to wish everyone a very safe and happy Easter. We hope everyone has a relaxing break and we can’t wait to share with you what we have in store during term 2.

See you soon!!

The Prep Team

Year 1

In Year 1, students have been had fun with their writing, participating in small group activities with others. They have been using sounds to help them spell words and focused on using capital letters and full stops when writing.

In Reading, students have engaged in predicting, inferring, and summarising narratives. They have been using Epic for independent reading.

During Health, students have discovered their individual identities and explored character strengths. They have discussed how different people have different character strengths and looked at how they use their own strengths.

In Maths, Year 1s have had fun with counting and place value. They have used online maths games and manipulatives to explore two- digit numbers and beyond.

Reminders for Term 2

  • Headphones- If your child does not have headphones at school, please have these for term 2. These are used throughout the day in all subjects including assessments.
  • Reading folders- please ensure your child returns their reading folder weekly with their Reading Journal and spelling words so the teacher can check in.

Have a fun and safe holiday 😊

The Year 1 Teachers

Year 2

The Year 2’s have been busy and productive in Term1,  with students familiarising themselves with the expectations of the transition from Year 1 to Year 2. They have settled into following good work ethics within their classrooms.

In reading the focus has been on comprehension and we have been exploring imaginative texts and information texts. Each student has also been creating their own individual reading goals during conferences with their classroom teachers. In our storybook lessons we have been reading stories including , The Snail and the Whale, Frank’s Red Hat and The Wombat’s Diary we have been looking at the vocabulary used in each book and then we explore beyond the book where students complete written tasks linking the book to their reading strategies. Through storybooks students are exposed to language that they might not necessarily find in everyday conversations. It is important to continue to read to you child at home not just the homereading books that are sent home. You can visit the local library and find some books for your child to read together. This is an excellent activity that is cost free that you may like to explore over the school holidays.

During our Grammar lessons we have been exploring nouns including common nouns, proper nouns, and pronouns and sentence structure and writing compound sentences. Students are working on how to improve our written work using adjectives; including how to identify them in a sentence.

In writing student have worked on writing narratives. Students are reminded that narratives must include a beginning, middle(problem) and end (solution) and must include characters and a setting.  Some of our writing goals include correct spelling, using punctuation, starting our sentences and proper nouns using a capital letter. Furthermore, we have worked on exciting starts to our stories,  using adjectives, verbs and including satisfying  endings. Encourage your child to write their own narratives at home. This week the students will be publishing their work, and we will have a celebration to share their work with other year 2 students. They are proud of their finished work and have been continually asking their teachers when they can take their work home.

In Numeracy, Year 2 have been learning about Telling the time both with digital and analogue clocks. At home you can encourage your children to tell the time using the clocks around your home. It is helpful to encourage your child to wear a watch and to be familiar with telling the time. They continue to work on number place value and number patterns. We have been looking at skip counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10s.

In Humanities we have been looking at how we are similar and different to each other and creating a positive classroom culture together. Students have been working together and learning accept their differences. In class they have been completing tasks to understand their differences. Our Harmony Day Celebrations were a great success with a high number of year 2 students dressing up.

In Science the year 2’s have explored the water cycle and how fresh water makes it into our taps for us to drink. The students have also been investigating water uses and the water cycle and the impact of pollution and understanding technical language such as precipitation, evaporation, collection, condensation, and water vapor.

Our students looked amazing in their hat with our hat parade…

We are excited about meeting our families for parent teacher interviews coming up next term and encourage our parents to book a time. This is an opportunity to meet you and dedicate time to speak with you about your child’s learning and progress.

Have a safe and relaxing break from school on the holidays and we look forward to continuing to aim for excellence with our Year 2’s next term.
