CURRICULUM FOCUS

As part of our reading block this week we will continue to improve our understanding of ‘retelling’ a fiction text.

VOCABULARY

Retell: identifying the most important parts in a story. When we retell a fiction text we think about who the characters are (people/animals/made up creatures), the setting (where the story happens), the problem (what goes wrong in the story) and the solution (how the problem was solved/fixed).

Fiction: a made up story for example: The Three Little Pigs, Dr Seuss, Pig the Pug etc.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Using a fiction book from either your child’s blue satchel or a book at home, encourage your child to read the book (if it is a dot book) or read the book to your child.

Whilst reading stop and discuss the different parts of a retell-

  • Where the story is taking place
  • Who the characters are
  • The problem in the story (if there is one)
  • How the problem is solved/fixed (if there's one)

Your child may then wish to draw each of the above parts discussed with you or using a device you may have at home you can record your child saying their retell of the book.
