Year 5 Excursion MCG
Nicola Dean
On Friday 7th June, the year 5’s went on an excursion to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. When we arrived, we had our snacks in the park and played footy and soccer. After that we went for a walk around the outside of the MCG. We saw statues of famous cricket and football players.
We then broke up into 3 groups and toured the inside MCG. Our guide Greg, showed us around the WHOLE ground, including the change rooms and the Museums.
We went down to the boundary line and saw how big the ground was. We learnt about how the MCG is self-sustainable as the roof is filled with solar panels and when it rains, all of the water is collected and used to wash the MCG.
We then got to see the records from the 1956 Melbourne Olympic game, including long jump and high jump. After that, we thanked Greg for taking us around the MCG and went downstairs to the Museum with lots of medals and other special items. We got to explore the Australian Sports Museum through a collection of Indigenous sporting moments. We were able to view and read stories centred around Indigenous athletes. My favourite was learning about the dances at the start of the AFL Dreamtime match. We also received a wrist band that let us interact with different questions that we can answer. Everyone thought it was great and learnt something new.
After that, our class went to meet an Olympic diver named Dean Pullar. He spoke to us about his Olympic story and how he had to struggle through failure and hard times, but that was the only way he could improve and keep trying. After that we went to an underground sports arcade called ‘Game On!’ We got to customise our own avatar and had interactive games to play such as footy, basketball, rock climbing and much more.
Everyone enjoyed it and we were exhausted. Overall, the MCG excursion was very entertaining and very enjoyable to everyone.

I enjoyed exploring the Australian Sports Museum Indigenous Sporting moments, including learning about why the players wear the Dreamtime tops and the meaning behind them. I also enjoyed looking at the Brownlow medals.

I liked the friendly people and the information that we learnt about during the MCG tour. We got to see all the famous artwork and learnt about the history of Melbourne. My favourite part was the wall where we got to see the Olympic records.

My Favourite part of the tour was meeting Dean Pullar. He taught us about showing resilience when things don’t go your way. Dean Pullar won Bronze at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Ari 5ND
