Civics and Citizenship

Grade 5 / 6

During Terms 1 and 2, the Grade 5/6 students studied the roles and responsibilities of different levels of government in Australia. They looked at the role of local government and their handling of community services and infrastructure at a local level, including waste management, parks, libraries, and local planning.

Meeting with local government officials like Mayor Clare Williams provided a firsthand opportunity for students to learn about the roles and responsibilities of different levels of government, as well as the importance of community involvement and collaboration. Overall, this visit served as a valuable educational opportunity for the students to connect classroom learning with real-world examples, fostering a deeper understanding of civic engagement, community involvement, and the interconnectedness of local and global issues.

The students were tasked with creating their own towns and writing persuasive pieces to encourage visits. By engaging in this project, students applied their understanding of towns and communities in a creative and practical way, while also honing their persuasive writing and presentation skills. It was a great opportunity for them to showcase their imagination and their understanding of the concepts they've learned.
