Performing Arts

Firstly, a huge congratulations to Blair, the winner of Grayling’s Got Talent 2024! Well done.

As we near the end of Term, the students currently participating in the Performing Arts program are nearing the end of their Performing Arts sessions, before exploring a different specialist subject next semester.

The Foundation students have recently worked on remembering dance choreography taught by Miss S and then being a part of an audience member. Students have watched videos of dance and responded to those videos, giving their opinion along the way. The recent activities ensure students can respond to the dance they view in a respectful and open-minded manner.

In Grades 1 and 2, students have also been working on responding to dance and offering their opinion on a range of dance videos. Students have explored cultural dance, different dance genres and even learning some Afro Dance via a video link. The students have had to step out of their comfort zones and explore dance that might be unfamiliar to them, while also developing an understanding of how dance can communicate ideas and share stories.

The Grade 3 and 4 students have worked on using expressive skills in dance, creating their own short dance routines that portray a specific emotion and then performing to their peers. The students were also identifying how the four elements of dance can be used to respond to a variety of dance videos. This meant that students needed to identify if the space, time, energy and music were being used well or not, and then discussing their opinion with peers in a respectful manner.

In Grades 5 and 6, students have made, performed and viewed a variety of dances. The students have been using expressive skills while performing, worked collaboratively with peers to explore choreography devices and used the elements of dance to respond to dance videos. Students have also extended their knowledge of production elements and viewed how dance performances are created in the use of these production elements.

Miss S and Mrs J hope all students have enjoyed Performing Arts this semester!
