Initia Lit – Reading
Over the past fortnight we have learnt three new sounds and discovered their corresponding letters and chants and characters – Umbrella Up, Bessie Bilby and Jan Jellyfish! We have been practising reading and writing words with our new sounds.
During our Storybook lessons, students explored the book, ‘There’s a Bear on My Chair’ by Ross Collins. We have acted out some interesting words ‘nasty,’ ‘despair,’ and ‘rare.’ We have also practised making pairs of rhyming words and creating our own book cover for a rhyming book.
Students have been continuing to use sound knowledge to segment and blend CV (consonant vowel) and CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. We have practised words like hut, cut, up, bet, jet, but, jut and hug. Students have also practised writing these words in sentences as well.
We have continued to look at capital letters, and have been talking about how some look the same as their lowercase letter, and some look different. We have also continued talking about names having capital letters at the start, and that we always have a capital letter at the start of a sentence.
We learnt some new tricky words –look, one, his and her. We have continued to practise our other tricky words as well - a, the, my, is, I, was, you, to, are, they, that, we, me, be, she, he and has.
Maths
In Maths this past fortnight, we have been deepening our learning and finished our unit on numbers 0-10. Students have continued practising counting forwards and backwards, sequencing numbers, learning 5-letter numbers names and becoming experts at number formation.
Students have also started looking closely at the days of the week. We have also talked about different times of the day, such as morning, afternoon and night, and the types of activities that we might do at these times.
Integrated
Over the past few weeks we have continued looking at our family histories and special memories in Integrated. We read the stories ‘I’m Australian Too’ and ‘Wilfred McDonald Gordan Partridge,’ both by Mem Fox. Students interviewed a member of their family about where they came from and what they wanted to be when they grew up, and then shared this with their class. We also shared a drawing of a special memory and told our peers about it.
Prep students have explored problem solving in Respectful Relationships. We have played the game ‘We’re packing for a picnic,’ which involved solving problems we might face and coming up with solutions to solve these problems. It was great fun and we developed our problem solving skills.
African Drumming Incursion
Prep students were lucky enough to attend an African Drumming incursion. We all got a turn at copying the drumming patterns and beats and got to show off our dance moves while we danced along to the drums. We had so much fun!
