Art

An amazing & creative term 2 is nearly at an end. Well done to all our artists to demonstrating our PROUD values especially for being ‘Daring’ when trying new art techniques.

Recently Preps have been learning about Bunjil the Bunurong creator spirit. We have read the story and shared prior knowledge of Bunjil and Aboriginal people. As a response, prep artists are constructing a  mixed media artwork that started with a painted background – it was so much fun to use our fingers when painting the tree tops!

Grade 1 artists have worked hard to create artworks of a forest using warm or cool colours in the background. We used water-colour paint, black paper and oil pastels to create our artworks but the most fun was had when we got to splatter our work with paint to depict the light coming through the trees.

Grade 2 artists have recently been learning how artists use space and scale to give the illusion of the third dimension in a drawing or painting. They’ve created beautiful ‘mythical’ landscapes with a castle in the distance. In the foreground students choose to draw either a unicorn, dragon or griffin in black & white oil pastel, contrasting beautifully with the brightly coloured backgrounds. Recently, students have learned about Barreamal the emu, a Bunnurong story that explains how the male emu does all the hard work raising the chicks – students were amused that it was the Dad that does all of the child rearing! In response to this story, students have created mixed media artworks including painting, drawing with pastel & slick sticks.

Grade 3 artists have enjoyed learning about the varied artworks of Indigenous artist Bronwyn Bancroft and have responded with landscape artworks that explore colour, pattern and incorporate a foreground, middle ground and background.

Grade 4 artists have been recently inspired by a storybook ‘Everything you need for a treehouse’. We observed the variety of tree houses included in the story and share experiences about time spent in tree houses and what they looked like. Students have created a collage of a tree including a tree house of their own design. It’s been so interesting to see the different ideas and designs that everyone has.

And last but not least our senior artists have been creating large semi-abstract animal portraits. These began with lots of torn paper pasted into a radial layout. Students then chose an animal and draw the eyes with oil pastels exaggerating the size of the eyes for effect. Once the eyes, nose or beak were attached to the background students used paint to imply fur or feathers. Some are currently on display in the main building, feel free to stop by for a look they are definitely impressive!

Enjoy your term holiday, I look forward to seeing everyone back in term 3.
