Year 1/2 Unit

What a fabulous first few weeks of the school year we have had in the Year 1/2 unit! 

The students have settled in brilliantly into their new classroom routines, and it has been lovely to see lots of new friendships blossoming in each of our classes. 

This year we have continued with the healthy snack break program, ‘Sip and Crunch’. This is where students bring in a healthy snack such as fruit or vegetables in a small container, which they can then put on their table each morning. We also encourage students to keep their water bottles on their tables (or other designated place) to allow students easy access to hydration and nourishment during a short brain break which will take place during our mornings. 

In Literacy, the Year 1/2s have started Phonics Plus, where students practise their phonics skills, handwriting and fluency reading. We have also been looking at a range of texts written by the wonderful Julia Donaldson, creating characters, sharing our opinions and being entertained by her excellent stories. 

In Maths, students have been working on skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. They have experimented with skip counting from different starting points and recognising the patterns in number sequences. This week we will start learning about place value and using concrete materials to make numbers. 

It was great to see so many parents at our ‘Meet the Teacher’ interviews. These sessions are a great time to share any vital information about your child, as well as pass on important updates, so thank you so much for attending these. Please speak to the class teachers if you did not manage to get an appointment. 

Finally, a huge thank you to all those who have returned the student information forms and the Swimming forms. If you have not yet done so, please return these to school as soon as possible.
