Year 5/6 - Senior Unit

Over the past two weeks, our Year 5/6 students have been busy learning across all areas of the curriculum.
In Reading, students have been exploring newspaper articles and identifying their key features. We have particularly enjoyed reading articles about the Winter Olympics and learning how journalists engage their readers. Kidsnews is one of our favourite websites! Students have also begun reading and answering questions about the Victorian Gold Rush as part of our preparation for camp.
In Writing, students created a feature article about themselves, highlighting what makes them unique and celebrating their personal strengths and values. We are currently working on our own free-choice newspaper articles. Lots of fun and a great way to start the school year, showcasing our interests and talents.
In Mathematics, students have continued developing their understanding of the Cartesian plane by plotting points on the x- and y-axes and working with positive and negative numbers. We have also been exploring symmetry, transformations, rotations and tessellations, with students enjoying the challenge of drawing pictures and creating patterns.
In Inquiry, we have been learning about the events that led to the Victorian Gold Rush and how this period shaped Australia’s population and identity. Students are excited to deepen their learning about the Gold Rush and the Eureka Stockade during our camp to Sovereign Hill. As we head off on camp today, we will share more next newsletter!
Thank you to all the parents who attended our Meet and Greet meetings — it was wonderful to meet you all! We hope you also got to look at our Coat of Arms display in our rooms, this was such a fantastic activity!
