On Tuesday 10 March, 42 students and 4 teachers left Wagga for a four-day camp at Katoomba. We were blessed with kind weather conditions, an abundance of food and scenery which attests to the awesomeness of our God. Students embraced the challenge of walking various tracks in the Katoomba area with determination, despite enthusiasm waning towards the end of the third day – they did exceptionally well as did the teachers.

Our spirits were fed by sessions led by Az Hamilton, who spoke on leadership, faith and how to hear from God. Students led the worship sessions which created an atmosphere for the Holy Spirit to minister to the hearts and minds of all in attendance. On our last night together, Phil Davidson, a local Christian singer, blessed us with music and song.

Before we retired on our last night at camp, students were given the opportunity to share what impacted them most during our time together. It was an honour to be present during this sharing and prayer time. While not everyone shared or prayed, I am confident that all have been challenged and left with things to ponder.

I wish to thank Mrs Cunningham, Mr Smith, and Mr Crick for attending the camp. Your willingness to give up your personal time to assist with the running of this camp is greatly appreciated, by me and the 42 students who attended.

Reading to Write

Year 11 EnglishStudies students recently embarked on an excursion to the Wagga Wagga City Library as part of their learning in the module Reading to Write: Transition to English Studies

Students participated in a scavenger-hunt style activity, where they explored the many resources and spaces available in the library. Students worked collaboratively to find specific locations in the library, re-enact book covers with their bodies, and talk with the librarians about their favourite books.

It was wonderful to see the class enjoying the local library and discovering the wealth of books, DVDs, and other resources available to the community.

Public Art for Youth

Year 10 classes recently took part in a creative workshop exploring the theme of personal strength as part of an exciting public art project for Youth Week. Students met with artist and Wagga Christian College teacher Emily Shannon, alongside Melissa Fattore, Youth Officer from Wagga City Council, for an engaging session designed to help them reflect on what strength looks like in their lives. To express these ideas visually, students added their words and designs to shoe artworks, and selected ‘strong’ colours and emojis to be included in a public artwork.

Our students’ work will be added to with work generated at two other community workshops, and assembled into a temporary floor mural titled ‘Standing Strong’ installed along Baylis Street pavement during April.

This public artwork celebrates the voices and strengths of young people during Youth Week and is supported through the Wagga Wagga City Council Public Art Plan. Wagga Christian College is proud to have it’s students involved in this initiative that encourages young people to reflect on who they are and the positive impact they can have in the world around them. Keep your eyes peeled for these works throughout April down Baylis Street!
