Term 1 Week 4 - 20th February 2026

Our fabulous Preps have continued their fantastic start to the year. We are proud of how they are going and it has been a pleasure seeing their smiling faces and enthusiasm each day.

Weeks 3 & 4 have been about consistency with our routines and classroom expectations. As a cohort, we have been learning classroom mission statements and classroom WIG’s (Wildly Important Goals) and using them to reinforce the expectations with students. Both classrooms have their displays up and running and the rooms are looking great!

As part of this, the learning program is in full swing. Students have been familiarising themselves with what a normal school day is like and building their confidence with the timetables and different lessons including their Specialist learning activities.

We have many exciting things planned for the term however at the moment we are taking it slow to allow the Preps to feel safe, secure and supported in their new classrooms.

We are all extremely proud of all Preps demonstrating resilience, bravery and courage and how they have transitioned to school.

What we are learning!

Maths:

We have continued learning about patterns in Maths this week and last. Students started off with simple two-step colour patterns and then moved into shape and object patterns as well. We have done lots of whole-class activities that provided everyone with concrete materials to use to create their patterns, but also practice listening and turn-taking.

Literacy:

Our literacy sessions run from 9.10 am right through until 11.30 am (with some brain breaks and fruit snack times in there). During this time, the Preps have been learning some prewriting signs and activities. We will shortly begin letter formation.

Since our last update, we have begun to really focus on letter sounds, letter names and the writing formation of some of the more common letters - s, t, a, p. Students have embraced our daily routines and been enthusiastic about learning new sounds and writing them on their whiteboards. They have also been introduced to i, m, f, c and soon we will be writing words that contain these letters and sounds. Hopefully, everyone has now seen the Grammy nominated video posted by Ms Diggins that shows how to practice your letter sounds at home. We are sending home packs of the sound cards for you to use. They just need to be cut up. If you have any questions, pop them in an email and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Another fun activity that the students have enjoyed has been Colourful Semantics. This is about building their understanding of who, what, when, where, why and what doing? We use colourful signage and lots of questions about what we are reading to build their comprehension, confidence and understanding of texts.

Leader in Me:

We have already spent a lot of time learning all about the 7 habits. We have synergised by playing together and cleaning up as a team. And we have been proactive by being in charge of our own bodies, and making sure that we are always making good and safe choices. We will continue to remind Preps to make positive choices in and out of the classroom.  We have also covered Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind and Habit 3: Put First things First and will continue embedding these into our daily teaching and language.
