Intermediate Tennis
On Thursday, the 22nd of February, Annie and Tom Kehoe, Harry Welsh, Emmett Tiley and Miss Hughes headed to the Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre to participate in the Eureka Division Intermediate Tennis Competition.
In Game One, Beaufort came up against Mount Clear, first playing singles, then doubles. Tom lost to fierce competition, 0-6 and according to Tom, the best he's ever played against. Annie fought hard but sadly lost 2-6, while Harry put on a dominant display, landing a few aces to take the win, 6-0. Emmett won his singles match 6-3, showing just how good he is at returns.
All players realised that the wind and heat would impact their game, but that didn’t stop them from trying their best. For doubles, Tom and Emmett went down 2-6, while Annie and Harry had a great win, only dropping one game, 6-1. Once Miss Hughes added up all the scores, it was 22 all. A draw with games and sets.
Game Two saw Beaufort take on Woodman’s Hill. Beaufort knew Woodmans were potentially the weaker side but that did not mean it would be easy. There was a great display of skill shown by Beaufort, with all four players winning their singles games. Doubles partners stayed the same, and both pairs took out a clean sweep, 6-0. Beaufort showed great sportsmanship, coaching, assisting, and encouraging the opposition players. There were high fives and compliments all around. It was great to see. Beaufort went on to win 36-1.
The final game of the day was against Ballarat High School. By this time the wind had really picked up, making serving and reading the play even more difficult. Tom put up a tough fight, making it to deuce in every game, but sadly lost 6-0. The BHS coach complimented Tom's skill and was very impressed by his determination. Harry won in a tough battle, 6-4, putting him on a hattrick wining streak. Annie lost her battle against Ballarat High's toughest player, 6-1, but to her credit, she dominated against the boys all day. Staff members from other schools were very impressed by her powerful returns and ability not to let her opponent get in her head.
Emmett’s final singles game was the game of the day. Emmett was fighting a tough battle, serving against the wind, but that did not stop him coming back from 0-3 to 5-3. It then came down to a tiebreak at 5 all. Emmett was playing very well but sadly lost to BHS 7-5. Annie and Harry won their doubles game but sadly, Emmett and Tom's final double game was cut short, due to BHS needing to catch the bus home. We had a great day, with wins, draws and losses. We were lucky enough to receive a frozen Coke treat on the way home as it was extremely hot and for that we would like to thank Miss Hughes. We would also like to thank her for driving and coaching us throughout the day. Another thank you goes to Mr Webb for organising the teams and day. We are very proud of our efforts and hope to return next year bigger and stronger.
The Habits of Mind students relied upon on the day were;
Students needed to stay focused, be persistent and not give up.
Students worked hard not to rush their serves, taking their time to think tactically.
Students tried their best to ensure their shots were accurate, while remaining calm under pressure.
