On Track

On Monday the 4th of March, students participated in the House Athletics Carnival at Llanberris Reserve in Ballarat. As students disembarked from the bus, it was evident there were many keen to have a go at a range of events, whether that be the short and long distance events or throwing and jumping events. The weather was good (with the exception of the gusty wind) as students began to ready themselves to compete.

The 800m run was the first track event, with our endurance athletes, Tom Lyons and Billy Welsh victorious. New staff member, Mr Severino, was out organising the Discus, which saw many great competitions throughout the day. Meg Lyons took the win for the 14-year-old Girls and Emily Johnston the 17-year-old girls.

Our Sprints were the next track event to take place, which saw Scarlett Vandenberg take the win for the 20-year-old Girls in the 100m. After Nicolas Stares claimed victory in Triple Jump, he too achieved a 1st for the 100m Sprint. In the 13-year-old Boys 400m Sprint, young gun Jonah Burrill was able to nab the win, while friends, Lily Peacock and Jas Poyser challenged one another in the Shot Put, with Lily winning by a marginal 20cm.

At the end of the day Relays commenced, with House Captains gathering their teams to achieve the best results. Tanaranga notably got a few teams together, to boost their chances of a House Victory.

We would like to thank staff for organising, marshalling, recording, and supervising on the day, especially our Sports Coordinator, Mitch Webb for his tireless efforts. Thanks also to Llanberris Athletics Reserve for hosting the event, and finally, a massive thank you to all the parents and students for attending, making it such a pleasant, yet competitive environment.

Over the next week students will be competing in the High Jump and after the completion of this, our Age Group Champions and overall House winner will be announced. The question remains, who will win? Kambara (green), Wandarra (blue), Tanaranga (yellow) or Taltarni (red)?

Students displayed many of the Habits of Mind during the course of the day. It was fantastic to see so many of our students not only participating, but also role modelling great behaviour. The most consistent Habits of Mind on show were;

Many students kept going even when they were struggling. They worked hard to give the best of themselves and did it all with a smile on their face.
