U13 Rugby League

The U13 Rugby League team have begun their pre-season games ahead of their competition later this year. Saints took a large squad to St Mary’s to face off in wet conditions. Saints made some early errors and absorbed a lot of pressure on our try line before managing to get through our sets and get out to a 16-0 lead at half-time. St Mary’s capitalised on some errors and scored two quick tries, putting us under pressure at 16-10. Saints wrestled back control with some big hits and strong carries to score three tries and take a 26-10 victory. Joeli Rokocibi came away with three tries and Year 7 student, Mikey Aniba was named player of the match for his impact in both attack and defence. The team will take on St Andrew’s at St Andrew’s on Thursday of Week 9. Year 7 games against Bentley Park and Newman College are currently being organised.

CISSA Sport

Saints have made a strong start to the CISSA season in our fixtures against Peace Lutheran College, Woree State High School and Bentley Park College. Saints AFL, basketball, football and touch football teams are all undefeated after three rounds. Our volleyball team have achieved one win, one draw and one loss to date. We will face St Mary’s in Week 9 where we will look to have a strong finish to the term before a week off for cross country in Week 10.

Saints hockey

Hockey at Saints is off to a promising start, where 30 students, fuelled by St Augustine’s sporting spirit, attended a competitive trial to compete for their chance at representing the school in the FNQ All-Schools Cup. This remarkable turnout not only demonstrates our students' passion for the game, but also effectively underscores the increasing competitiveness and exposure of the College’s hockey program.

Initially, the boys took on Cairns High in a practice match on Wednesday 28 February where they provided a dominant display triumphing with an impressive score of 6-1. This game had a variety of goal scorers, and team member Oliver Donnelly received the best and fairest award. In a similar fashion, our boys took on Cairns High again on Thursday 7 March and proved once again why we are the superior Cairns school. Anthony Taifalos with 3 goals and Franky Baker with 2, alongside best and fairest Matthew Pitts, sealed a convincing 5-0 victory over their opponents, ending the day on a high.

Next day the tournament resumed, and our boys faced Ignatius Park College Townsville. With terrible rainy playing conditions, the boys fought hard for their 2-0 victory. Special mentions of Lucas Brierley, who scored both goals this game, as well as Marlon Sandoval who made a cracking save in the first half, and best and fairest Beau Fraser. In the second game this day however, the boys suffered a crushing defeat to the strong Kirwin State High School team, going down 3-1. Franky Baker scored the team's only goal despite numerous chances to even the score in the second half. The best and fairest award once again went to Matthew Pitts. The boys however kept their heads high and were gracious in defeat while readying themselves for their final game against Ryan Catholic College. The team again proved dominant winning 6-0, with the best and fairest award going to Sam Smyth.

With 4 out of 5 wins to kick off the school hockey year, the Saints team showed exceptional talent, and have a promising future as they prepare for the FNQ school tournament in Townsville later this year.

Cross country

The annual College Cross Country Carnival will be held on Wednesday 27 March at the Cairns Showgrounds. The carnival will begin at 12:15pm and end by 2:30pm. Parents are invited and welcome to attend. This is a compulsory event for all Years 7 to 12 students. Students unable to participate because of a medical condition will be given jobs on the day.  Parents are asked to inform their son’s head of year of this before the carnival. A broadcast will be sent to parents and carers with a detailed program and more information.

Special achievements

Congratulations to Henry King and Jhett Wollin who were selected in the Queensland  cricket and baseball teams after their performances at the recent state schoolboys championships.

Congratulations Finn Slade who represented St Augustine's at the Australian Interschool MTB Race in Thredbo earlier this term against over 170 riders in his age category.

Dylan Wright recently represented Australia at the Waterskiing World Championships achieving a silver and bronze medal, helping the Australian team to a victory against the New Zealand team. Well done, Dylan.

2024 TCC Sport

Congratulations to all the St Augustine’s students that have been successful so far in their TCC district sport trials, please ensure that sac.absences@cns.catholic.edu.au is notified of any student absences for the TCC and Peninsula trials. The full procedure is outlined, below.

St Augustine's is part of the Trinity Coast Central (TCC) district within school sport. TCC is the pathway to represent the Peninsula region in Queensland School Sport Championships. The TCC sign-up process is electronic in 2024 with students able to register their interest for the trials by completing a Microsoft Form from their accounts. This will ensure that a Parent Slip is sent home prior to the trials with the necessary paperwork. These forms can/are then to be re-uploaded to the Parent Slip with permission attached for approval by Mr Seivers. Alternatively, please email the forms to Mr Di Salvo at sac.sport@cns.catholic.edu.au if you have any difficulties reuploading the form to the parent slip. Please refer to the 2024 TCC calendar for trial information.

The St Augustine’s TCC application process is outlined below.

  1. Students complete the TCC Sport Microsoft Form from their accounts to register their interests in their chosen TCC sports. If students wish to trial for more than two sports in a calendar year, they must apply by emailing Mr Di Salvo who will seek an exemption from Mr Seivers.
  2. Before the trials, a parent slip will be sent home with documents attached for completion to grant permission for your son to attend the trials.
  3. Parent/guardians are to complete the Peninsula student permission details and consent form and upload it to the Parent Slip. This form must be submitted before completing the parent slip. Alternatively, this form can be sent to sac.sport@cns.catholic.edu.au
  4. The college will ensure that Mr Seivers signs the document. Students will then collect the signed document from the student office and take it to their trials.
  5. Students must have this booklet completed to be allowed to trial for a TCC team.

Students are no longer required to complete a Request for Leave form if they are absent from school for TCC or Peninsula school-based sport. However, Parents/guardians are required to email sac.absences@cns.catholic.edu.au to advise of the upcoming school sport related absence. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they contact their teacher regarding any work that they may miss on these days, keeping up to date with classwork and submitting any assignments due during the student’s absence. If students are successful in making Peninsula teams, they are entitled to approved leave for the duration of the carnival as well as a travel day either side. Any additional days of absence may be classified as unapproved leave.
