Reading

In reading at the so far this term as a class we have been reading the book Holes and been doing some thinking (T.E.E.L.) tracks on it. We have also been learning about direct and indirect sentences and how to put questions in full sentences. Another thing we’ve been learning about is inferring. Recently we have done some inferring on the book, The Sweetest Fig. We have also explored symbolism in texts. Here are some examples of our CSI charts (colour, symbol, image).

Writing

In writing we’ve been learning how to describe objects instead of saying them which we call

‘Show Don’t Tell’. It really improves our writing skills and creates a picture in the reader’s mind. We are creating plans to make an interesting and descriptive story. We share our stories with our class and everyone is doing well. Jayden

“I could hear a soft humming and see the soft eerie greenish glow as I admire the aged front cover. I can feel the old leather cover as I open the pages. I can taste dust centuries old in the air. I hear the pages rustling as I turn them”. -Jonah Northway

Numeracy

For Maths at the start of the term, the Grade 5s have been learning about place value.

In this subject we have been focussing on identifying large numbers. We have also been doing a lot of fun math games, like place value Snakes and Ladders. We also played this game where you need to roll 5 six-sided dice and put them in a line, and then whoever got closest to 1000 won. We have also learnt a little bit about addition this week. During this start to addition, we have been doing some simple questions and sums. We have also been working on our vocabulary in addition.

Inquiry

In Inquiry we have been doing work on the human body. So far we have covered the Urinary System, the Human Digestive System and the Respiratory System. This week I have learnt that the Respiratory System gets oxygen from your blood and releases carbon dioxide from the body. We have also learnt where all the digestive system parts are and fun facts about the Urinary system! We have been drawing diagrams and working out where body parts are in each system. I have definitely have learnt some new and interesting things. I am looking forward to continuing this unit!
