We have had a fabulous start in Year 4. We have been so impressed with each of our student’s dedication and growth in learning. The Year 4’s are taking more responsibility for their learning and achieving fantastic results.
We have started the year by allowing students to be responsible for choosing the best place for them to sit to help their concentration and learning. Many students are taking this privilege and showing great respect for their own learning and those around them. We offer some flexibility in working environments, including our mini library area, the breakout room, and the floor.
In Maths, we have been learning about place value, addition and subtraction. The Year 4’s have had lot’s of fun using manipulatives, creating place value parks and working out the value of their candy bags. Students were able to understand that the value of each number is different depending on which place column it is in. During the addition and subtraction unit, students became familiar with both vertical addition and subtraction strategies, as well as number lines to assist their understanding. The students were able to practice these skills through open ended activities and tasks set on their iPads.
Students have been busy working hard at their descriptive and narrative writing. They have worked on sentence structures to create complex sentences and to add describing words to each sentence. It has been wonderful to see such improvement in their writing.
In Inquiry, the year 4 students have been learning about both safe use of digital media alongside completing a research project on positive role models and leaders in the community/world. This task required students to follow a brief and use the internet to find specific information about their role model to present to the class. The project has allowed students to develop their awareness of attributes of what a strong leader holds, how to be a good citizen and how this can make a difference to society and world problems. We were so pleased to see how dedicated students were to find someone they looked up too and the effort they went to create/present something they were proud and passionate about.
