Max’s Journey at KHG
Congratulations to KHG Participant Max, who has just graduated from Grow on the Go to head straight into his dream job in horticulture. We recently chatted to Max about his new job and how his time at Kevin Heinze Grow has helped him achieve his goal of finding a job in horticulture.
Max began his journey at Kevin Heinze Grow taking part in Grow Glen Eira program. GROW Glen Eira is an exciting and innovative all abilities Horticulture Training program for young people with a disability seeking open employment in horticulture. Each year, six participants undertake a customised hands-on horticulture training program. Under the guidance of the GROW Glen Eira Coordinator, participants complete paid work placements. Max undertook his placement at the Kevin Heinze Grow nursery in Doncaster, learning customer service skills and nursery maintenance.
After successfully completing the Grow Glen Eira program, Max then joined the Grow on the Go team. Grow on the Go is a program that trains three participants each year with the skills for long-term employment over a 12-month period. The program provides a solid employment pathway for people with disabilities who have identified a career in garden-maintenance and landscaping. Being part of the Grow on the Go allowed max to learn a range of applicable skills helping to prepare him for future work in the field of horticulture. The program taught a range of skills such as how to use power tools, how to work safely and professionally at different sites and many garden maintenance tricks of the trade.
Max’s mum Jane says “the team was able to support him to build some skills, experience, and confidence. Max has now begun his Gardening job and is loving it, coming home chatty and enthusiastic every day. I am sure his time at Kevin Heinze was essential to him getting this opportunity.” The Grow on the Go program and Grow Glen Eira have helped Max transition into employment in his area of interest. We are excited that Max is taking the next steps in his career in garden maintenance.
