Bike Education
This term, students in Year 3/4 are learning valuable lessons in bike education and road safety. We have been luck enough to interview 2 students from our Peacock campus about their experiences.
What is your name and year level?
My name is Mahaylia H and I am in Grade 4.
My name is Maksim B and I am in Grade 3.
Tell us about Bike Education!
Mahaylia – Bike Ed was really fun! We started off in Groups of 3 one would go into Art or Sport, and the other would go to bike ed on the oval. Ms Wright would teach bike ed. I was in group 1, about 6 people (including me) learnt to ride a bike in the first lesson! I don’t know about the other groups. If you were confident in riding a bike you would move to group 2 and learn to ride a bike at a different time. I didn’t know how to ride a bike until the first lesson. I wish there were more smaller bikes, so we didn’t have to share the bikes and we had one each!
Maksim – I was in group 2 with 21 other people. It was really fun but the worst part was we couldn’t ride outside of school. I really wanted too! We did like 4-5 bike riding skills and stuff. I had lots of fun with my friends that were in the same group as me. My favourite thing was getting to ride bikes around the school.
We leave the bikes over in the Grade 3-6 building, and we take them out to the oval when we want to ride them.
What did you learn?
Mahaylia - The most important thing I learned was that I had to keep pedaling to keep the bike straight when I ride it! Otherwise, it will wobble from side to side, and you can fall off.
Maksim - I also learned that you have to look both ways before you start riding! I learned this the hard way because I accidently bumped into someone’s bike when they turned the other way and I hurt my elbow – but they didn’t hurt themselves.
The most important thing I learned was about T-crossings on the roads, and how to safely cross train tracks. I learned that I have to open and close the little gate by myself. I just have to get off the bike and walk it across but wait for a little while before I cross because trains could be coming fast!
Do you have any tips for those learning to ride a bike?
Mahaylia - If anyone is learning to ride bikes at home, they just need to keep pedaling! Even though it might exhaust you, just keep trying and you’ll go straight. If you keep trying you will actually learn! To not give up.
Maksim - If anyone is learning to ride a bike at home, just remember to stop when cars are coming and give way to them.
What are you looking forward to in Term 4?
Mahaylia - In term 4 I can’t wait to go on Excursion to the new Waterworld (Norlane ARC) for swimming!
Maksim - In term 4 I am looking forward to going swimming to Waterworld (Norlane ARC)! We go in different groups and at different times.
A huge thank you to Mahaylia and Maksim for their efforts this term and sharing their story with us!
Makey Makey
Makey Makey sessions have been held with our Year 3/4's across term 3. They involve designing your own controller with everyday materials like playdough or a banana! It allows students to reprogram the world by connecting everyday objects to a computer. Students learn about digital systems, and components that make up a system, using the Makey Makey technology.
Please meet Rylan B from Year 3, and Malia D from Year 4, both based at the Wexford campus, discussing their experiences with Makey Makey!
My Name is Rylan B and I am in year 3
Makey makey is where you learn and it’s like a club. They give you like a game board and if you have some playdough, you stick the cords into the playdough and you go onto build any game you want. Then you press the playdough like a button and play through that. This is my gameboard.
I am recording some rules for the game on my computer, like if you roll a number you have to say 2 jokes.
My name is Malia D and I am in year 4
I am doing a pool for my makey makey. I am doing rules about my pool and rules about the game. I have to record my rules onto my computer. I save it and can edit it if it needs to be louder, softer, faster or slower. This is my board game.
Also meet Hams M and Jaylee H both in year 4 at the Tallis campus.
They have both had a great time with Makey Makey! We spoke to them about their favourite class, how they would help someone struggling, how to best contribute to the school environment and what they are looking forward to in term 4!

Meet Matt L, the future Mayor of Geelong!
The Year 5 and 6 students recently had the privilege of welcoming the City of Geelong Mayor, Trent Sullivan, for a special incursion as part of their HASS unit. Mayor Sullivan shared valuable insights about local government, civic responsibilities, and the importance of community engagement. The students were captivated by his discussion on how decisions are made at the council level and how they impact the community.
This discussion had a special impact on our very own Grade 6 student, Matt L from the Wexford campus. Matt has decided he would like to be the Mayor one day. Students from the Wexford campus interviewed Matt in a series of short films.
A very special thank you to Matt L, Jamie S, Lexi O, Madu O, Emma C and Shey Gay M for their hard work in developing the interview!
